Possible dark horse for coaching job.

Recommended Posts

The names that get mentioned the most are Fratello, Van Gundy, Rivers, and Silas.

A dark horse for this job could be Kenny Smith.

Could Kenny make a Doc like debut into coaching?

There was an article in the Mercury News by Bud Geracie that I can't seem to get to come up now, but in it, it was mentioned that three leading candidates for the Hawks job all work for TNT - Van Gundy, Fratello, and Smith.

Ill see if I can get the article to come up.

It's not the one I mentioned, but it does mention Kenny Smith as a top candidate for the job:

With Terry Stotts in an interim capacity, the next Atlanta Hawks coach likely will be a TNT analyst. The lead contenders are Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Fratello and studio ace Kenny Smith. Van Gundy could not be hired until next season or the Hawks would owe the New York Knicks compensation.

"That speaks to the quality of our people," says Turner vice president Greg Hughes.

I like Kenny Smith and I respect his basketball knowledge. Everytime he speaks about us on TNT I usually agree with him. He has never said the hawks need this and that player wise, he has always said the hawks need to do this, and thats what I expect from a coach. A good coach can mask his players deficiencies and work with what he's got.

Kenny Smith's name was brought up back before we hired Lon Kruger. Ernie Johnson even stated it on Inside the NBA, although Kenny didn't give a serious reaction to the statement.

I agree. I think Kenny is a bright young basketball mind and wouldn't hesitate to give him a chance. He's the guy that keeps that studio group together, IMO.

This would be my pecking order for possible coaches:

1. Doc Rivers

2. Mike Fratello

3. Kenny Smith

4. Jeff Van Gundy

5. Paul Silas

6. Johnny Davis

7. Scott Skiles

8. Larry Drew

9. Terry Stotts

Ok, seeing that many believe that we will move to a GM and Coach.. How do these combos sound.

GM/Coach.

Fratello/K. Smith

Fratello/T. Stotts - It's possible that Stotts stay with Fratello having a quick exit.

Fratello/Silas - Silas is not a GM type.

Fratello/Van Gundy - This would be FUNNY.

Fratello/Nique - Nique gets Coaching Experience under a good player's coach.

Rivers/K. Smith. - Can you see Doc hoovering?

Rivers/Nique - The ole 1-2 again.. Doc still calling the shots.

Rivers/Fratello - Hmm?

Isiah/K. Smith - Darn, I can see this one?

Isiah/Rivers - Can't see it, but it would be monstrous.

Isiah/Nique - Hmm?

Isiah/Fratello - Wow

Isiah/Silas -?

Isiah/Mahorn - Now... I'd go for that.

Isiah/Johnny Davis.

Bird/Smith - You know?

Bird/Stotts - Hmm?

Bird/Van Gundy - Hmm?

Knight/ISiah - Isiah wants power.

Knight/Doc - Doc wants Power.

Knight/Nique - Would anything change?

Knight/Stotts - Would anything change?

Knight/Gentry - Gentry's soon to be fired.

Knight/Silas - Hmm?

Knight/Fratello - IF Fratello had final say on Personnell, this might happen.

Knight/Van Gundy - Have to see where JVG head is.

Gentry has already been fired, and he should never, ever be considered for a head coaching job again. He's completely incompetent as a head coach. He's been a flop at two places.

IMO, if Doc were to take just the GM role, Johnny Davis would get the head coaching job. Doc has been campaigning for Davis to get a head job for a while now.
