Ira Newble, the Atlanta Hawks free agent the Bulls were considering in case they lost Scottie Pippen, is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers today, according to his agent, Steve Kauffman.

Next up: Free agent guard/forward Ira Newble attended last night's game and met with General Manager Jim Paxson and coach Paul Silas.

"After meeting with coach Silas, he seems like a coach I would enjoy playing for," Newble said. "We had a good meeting and I'm positive on what the team has."

Newble, who just finished his second season with Atlanta, is expected to sign with the Cavs next week.

A SIGHTING: Former Hornets center Elden Campbell is available, and believe it or not, there is interest.

The Knicks are also in the market for a post player. Atlanta center Theo Ratliff has been mentioned by New York media as a possibility, as has Campbell.

Knicks coach Don Chaney had kind words for both.

"We need a big, dominating guy who can post up," Chaney told the New York Post of Ratliff. "We need an intimidator inside."

Another possibility is a trade with Atlanta for Theo Ratliff, who could supply shot-blocking and rebounding.

No Brand? Then it's generic (7-19-03).

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/6337820.htm

One possibility the Heat is exploring involves Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Jason Terry, according to his agent, Raymond Brothers.

The Heat has had ongoing conversations with Terry's representatives about the guard, who averaged 17.2 points and 7.4 assists last season.

The Heat has been linked to Terry in the past. At last season's trade deadline, Miami was believed to be considering a major deal that would have netted the four-year veteran from the University of Arizona.

Atlanta extended a qualifying offer to Terry prior to the free agency period, ensuring its right to match competing offers -- as the Clippers did with Brand.

But with Atlanta's unstable ownership situation -- Dallas businessman David McDavid has been in talks with current owner AOL Time Warner about a purchase since October -- nothing is happening in the front office. Former general manager Pete Babcock, who was fired, hasn't been replaced.

For now, the Heat continues to express its interest, and Terry has made his clear as well.

''Jason is very interested in playing in Miami,'' Brothers said.

One drawback with Terry is his restricted free agent status, which would require the Heat to extend an offer sheet Atlanta could match.

AOL Time Warner also is negotiating a sale of the Atlanta Hawks basketball team, the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team and the rights to the place they play, Philips Arena, to Dallas car dealer David McDavid. Analysts have said AOL Time Warner could reap $750 million selling those teams and baseball's Atlanta Braves.

Around the NBA (7-18-03).

Second-year guard Dan Dickau has played very well for Atlanta, and draft picks Boris Diaw and Travis Hansen have also looked good. Diaw probably won't ever be much of a scorer in the NBA, but he could turn into a defensive stopper and hustler along the lines of Indiana's Ron Artest and Dallas' Eduardo Najera. Two of my other favorites on the Hawks' summer roster are Corey Benjamin, an exciting swingman, and Chris Porter, a former second-round pick who definitely should find a roster spot some place.

UPDATE 3-AOL Time Warner to sell CD/DVD-making unit (7-18-03).

http://reuters.com/financeNewsArticle.jhtm...storyID=3116048

AOL Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting division is close to selling the Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team, the Atlanta Thrashers pro ice hockey team, and operating rights to Philips Arena in Atlanta for $350 million to $400 million, according to a source familiar with the situation.

A Turner spokesman said on Thursday that meetings with the potential buyer, Texas businessman David McDavid, "are ongoing" and the parties "are making progress."

Chat wrap: David Aldridge July 17.

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=3769

Mike, Detroit: Hey David... After reading The Mag's article on DerMarr Johnson, it seems like he could be a surprise pickup for some teams. What is his status after the injury and do you believe that a team like the Pistons who need a SF could make him useful and take a chance on him?

David Aldridge: He was on Memphis' summer league team and did okay. It's going to be a long process for him to get his strength and timing back in actual games. Hopefully the Grizzlies can keep him around this season and let him come back slowly.

If any of these articles have already been posted, my apoligies. I've been out of town until recently. I tried to glance over the posts to try to avoid this.

Go Hawks,

Todd
