Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem was charged Sunday with marijuana possession, speeding -- and, for good measure, having illegal window tinting, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The incident began as a traffic stop shortly after 3 p.m. on the Gratigny Parkway between Northwest 42nd and 57th avenues in Miami-Dade, said FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky.

An FHP trooper pulled over Haslem, 30, who had been driving east in his 2008 Mercedes-Benz, after he was clocked going 78 mph in a 60 mph zone, Wysocky said.

The trooper smelled marijuana in the vehicle, FHP said. After a search, Haslem and his passenger, Antwain Fleming, were arrested and charged with marijuana possession, Wysocky said.

Haslem was also charged with having an illegal window tint.

Both men were expected to be taken to a Miami-Dade County jail Sunday night.

MIAMI -- A Miami Heat player was arrested Friday morning in a traffic stop in Coral Gables.

According to Coral Gables police, a detective in an unmarked vehicle saw a car that was "impeding the flow of traffic" in the 7100 block of Old Cutler Road just after 8:40 a.m.

The detective watched the car for several blocks and grew concerned that the driver, identified as Miami Heat star Carlos Arroyo, was posing a safety risk, so he called for a marked police unit.

An officer arrived on a motorcycle and tried to pull the car over, but he would not, police said. Eventually, Arroyo pulled over, but police said he would not get out of his car, and when he finally did, he resisted the officer trying to put the handcuffs on him, according to Coral Gables police.

Police said Arroyo posed a threat to himself and the officers who were trying to pull him over and that he was confrontational after they arrested him.

Former NBA player Antoine Walker was charged with suspicion of drunk driving in Miami Beach early Monday morning, further hurting his chances of playing again this season.

THE ARREST

Walker was driving a black Mercedes without the lights on when he was pulled over at 5:39 a.m., according to the arrest report. Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and wrote in the report that Walker had a sleepy look on his face. He refused a breathalyzer test.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Miami Heat forward James Posey was arrested early Monday on a drunken driving charge after an officer pulled him over for stopping in the middle of a road.

Posey had stopped his car on a double-lane Miami Beach road, talking to occupants of other vehicles and pedestrians, police said.

Once out of the car, Posey displayed "bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath," the police report said. The player also was unsteady on his feet and swayed while standing, police said.

Posey was arrested and taken to Miami-Dade County jail. He was later released on $1,000 bond.

Posey issued an apology Monday night through the team, denying the charges.

"Please know that I was neither intoxicated nor was I driving at the time," Posey said. "However, out of respect to the police, and to the legal process which must follow, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this moment."

ORLANDO, Fla. — Robert Hite is wearing a New Jersey Nets jersey this week for summer league play, with hopes that some NBA club will offer a second chance he insists is deserved.

And if that team is the Miami Heat, well, the second-year guard will be absolutely thrilled.

"If they want me back," Hite said, "I'll definitely come back."

The way Hite sees it, he should have never left South Florida in the first place.

The former University of Miami standout seemed a longshot to make the Heat's regular-season roster when the then-reigning NBA champions invited him to training camp a year ago. But Hite earned a spot, played in 12 games over the season's first 2 1/2 months and rewarded the Heat when given significant playing time, averaging 11.7 points in the three games in which he played at least 20 minutes.

His stint ended without warning - and, as Hite says, without cause.

Hite was arrested on a drunken-driving charge in Miami Beach around 4 a.m. on Jan. 21, held in jail for eight hours and wound up missing the Heat's afternoon game that day with the Dallas Mavericks. Heat coach Pat Riley sent him home the next day so he could "get his personal issues in order," and wound up cutting him two weeks later so the team could use his roster spot - and locker - on veteran Eddie Jones.

One small problem: Hite wasn't drunk that fateful night.

The charge was later dropped when blood-alcohol tests showed him to be well within legal limits, but Hite believes his name still carries the smear of that arrest. Hite, who is considering filing suit against the Miami Beach Police Department, wound up finishing the season in Sioux Falls of the NBA Development League, yet knows that this week's summer league affords him a great chance of returning to the top level.

"I've been over it," Hite said. "It happens. ... We'll see where the lawsuit goes. But right now, I'm just trying to play basketball."

Prosecutors have dropped all marijuana possession charges against Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem(notes), simply saying the case could not be proven.

(Asst. State Atty. Errol) Portman wrote that Haslem’s fingerprints were not on the container of marijuana found in the vehicle, and as such, it couldn’t be proven that Haslem was actually in possession of the contraband.

The Heat forward was arrested Aug. 15 after being clocked driving 78 mph in a 60 mph zone on the Gratigny Parkway in Miami-Dade County. A search of his 2008 Mercedes turned up marijuana, which passenger Antwan Fleming claimed ownership of when questioned by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Fleming’s fingerprints were found on the container, Portman wrote.

“While there was probable cause for the arrest of Udonis Haslem (it was in the car driven by Udonis Haslem, the car belonged to Udonis Haslem, the cannabis was in the immediate vicinity of Udonis Haslem, etc.), the State could not prove Udonis Haslem’s knowledge or possession of the cannabis beyond a reasonable doubt,” Portman said.

If our NBA players would quit thinking they're justified in driving at any desirable speed, they will have won half the battle.
