Washington Nationals problem - - I have a simple solution.

Runner is tearing down the line toward 1st base.  Catcher fields the ball and his throw hits runner in the helmen.  Safe and winning run scores.  Now, there is a running lane in foul ground that the runner is supposed to stay in.  Problem is, 1st base is only in fair territory.

Simple solution.  Add a duplicate 1st base bag against the regular 1st base bag in foul territory.  You can even make it a different color.  When a runner is going to 1st and the 1st baseman is awaiting the throw, runner must use this other base.  The present lane they use now would lead the runner directly to this base.  Since it is the same size as the regular base it is exactly the same distance from home plate.  This extra base would only come into play on a close play.  Runner, when the 1st baseman is not covering the base would be free to tag the regular base and proceed on to 2nd base if he can make it.

Someone please pass this simple solution to the powers that be.  Thanks.

The XL first base bag adopted this season was supposed to remedy this on its own. It hasn't?

Not at all.  The base is all in fair territory.  The lane to run in is in foul territory.  If the runner stays in the lane that is there for them to run in, they can't step on the 1st base because it's not there.  The only thing that having bigger bases has acomplished, it's inches closer between bases.

See, I agree. I'd proposed that they just put a whole other first base beside the existing one, except in foul territory--pretty much like what you've said. Gray, they just need to put us in charge, right?!?
