I was just talking to my dad, the old ex coach himself, about this. He is even more upset with guys than I am. Trae as you said has been playing the best defense of his life this season and yet other than JJ and some of OO no one else seems to bother playing defense. It is mind boggling how bad this team's defense has been this season.

And peopled wondered why I simmed the rest of this season on NBA 2K for next season. I frankly hope they just tank the rest of this season. Play the young guys, lose on purpose and hope for a high lottery pick. Either keep that pick or use it to get a player. It kills me to watch older Hawks games where the team actually played defense to what we've been since the ECF run. This team is just allergic to defense. Every random role player lights us up. I've never seen a NBA team literally incapable of defending back cuts.

So @Spud2nique I meant to ask you earlier but quoting wasn't working for me: Why do you have a problem with Bufkin? He's dominated the G league and the one time he got actual minutes he looked pretty good. -

FWIW I've been told by my two Hawks sources that I should not worry about Trae demanding a trade this offseason. Apparently the plan is finally pay into the first apron LT and get better talent that fits Quin and Trae. I am...dubious af at this but I'll admit I'm in my feels over how worthless our owner has been since buying the team.

Its been mentioned in public our scouting department and the FO loved Kobe Bufkin and were surprised he was there for us to draft.

I know Bey tries but I hope they let him go. He doesn't play any defense and his only saving point is his three point shooting and he has been awful this year.

I haven't heard yet. They could still keep him because he's still a name guy but I'd like them to use a certain coach from UGA...

I think Trae will be moved in the summer. Not from my sources just my own putting things together and knowing how cheap Ressler is. If the choice is keeping Trae happy by adding salary and paying the LT or unloading Trae to rebuild and be even cheaper...we know which one Messy Ressy will pick.

whoa, really? Last I had heard it was at 7'7" but if that's the official measurement he's even longer than I thought. That's a definite positive.

He is like Yao Ming before the injuries. He doesn't have elite passing but he's a good passer for his position. He is not A. Sabonis who was a legit unicorn of unicorn in his younger playing days. Rik Smits...he has better touch around the rim and is a better rebounder than Smits but he's not the shot blocker Smits was. He still blocks shots well enough with a 7'7" wingspan. He does have the high basketball IQ that Smits had. Yao Ming pre injuries is the best comparison but it isn't an exact match.

It was. Remember at that point it was before Lauri's AS breakout season. Messy Ressy didn't want Lauri's contract.

I agree with you about him. I think if he got a coach that believed in him like Malone did with Jokic he could be a scary player in the NBA because his efficiency numbers are insane. You expect some of that to come down in the NBA but I can't see it falling off a cliff like some in this thread are expecting.

The complaints about his defense are what people said about Jokic, Nurkic and Sabonis. All of them are good enough on defense in the modern NBA. I am not saying the criticism about Edey's foot speed is invalid just pointing out that other guys around that size are able to defend just fine. Zach Edey is an elite inside paint player who could feast from our team spamming 5 and creating space for him on the interior. He's an excellent rebounder as well. I would rather take someone else because I think we need a guy like Reed or a big wing more but if Edey is there I wouldn't be upset if we took him.

I've been going back and watching those Hawks teams and the earlier Joe/Josh/Horford teams. It is so nice to remember a time when the Hawks actually played defense.

I will still be a fan but I am emotionally done with the die hard emotional investment I've had in this franchise since my Dad sat me on his knees to watch the 1979 Hawks at the Omni. Until the SEVENTH richest owner in the NBA decides to pay the luxury tax and not be a bottom five payroll EVERY YEAR he's owned this franchise we will never be a serious playoff team let alone a contender. We're not even playing the young guys in blowout losses in what is a clear lost season. Speechless. I'm done, everyone. If they do something in the summer that actually means something I might emotionally invest into the team again but now I'm like @sturt .

I would kill for Reed Sheppard on this team. We also need a true big wing defender in the worst way.

I have been told if you put a gun to Quin's head he'd rather keep DJ and trade Trae to have Dj back at point but that's the cash cow we're talking about. I feel like I will start to sound like a broken record about this but I don't care. This team every year under Messy Ressy is literally one of the cheapest teams in the NBA. Every.damn.year. We could have easily signed someone with the MLE to address the POA defender role. We could have used the TPE from JC to do the same thing. Newp. We just sit back and do nothing so Messy Ressy continues to have a bottom four or five payroll in the entire league.

If OO has a serious toe injury and Capela is still out after the AS break...yowie wowie. This team will be unwatchable on defense. I mean it already is but even more so. Tonight was a bad loss. There's been this mystery sickness in the locker room most of the season and right now Bruno and Mills have it. So Bruno gets a pass from me for being out there sick. Trae and DJ were awful tonight. The refs were swallowing the whistle and letting the Bulls murder our guys but I expect them to play through that. DJ especially seemed to just tune out and give up sometime in the 2nd quarter. We need to be playing our young guys and not giving minutes to guys like the Matthews or Mills when he's healthy.

The plan is to trade for KAT, yes. I just worry if we have enough assets to get him. The one thing that will put other teams off is his salary. Going from the first apron to the second is a huge deal.

I'm trying so hard not to make something of someone saying six minutes total all season of a rookie in garbage time gives you an informed opinion of them. Bro... Good win tonight. I missed last night and this night's game due to Columbus River Dragons (we won both games btw). This team is really playing with more energy. It is really a good sign to see all the injuries and we still find ways to win.

You mentioned Shaq because he's a white American player? Oh wait, he's not. Insert strawman. Being a white AMERICAN superstar is what I am talking and only have been talking about. Jokic is not that. Luka is not that. Steve Nash was not that. The last white AMERICAN superstar player was Bird and he got marketing deals out the whazzoo back in the day. Saying Flagg being a white AMERICAN superstar in the making has no impact on his market appeal is, again, frankly silly.

I just have to point out, again, we have one of the lowest payrolls in the entre NBA and have been every year under Ressler. He's only the seventh richest owner in the ENTIRE league. You aren't going to win if you aren't willing to pay for the talent. Landry Fields asking for patience when we're what 3 years removed from the ECF run is rich. I know, I know, my sources and those with @NBASupes and @Mikey and I believe @thecampster keep saying expect big trades in the summer. I will believe it when I see it.
