Quick Question About Picks

Can teams in this years draft trade picks at anytime? (i.e. If the Hawks did want to trade down with N.O. could they do it today, or do they have to wait untill the playoffs are over, or is there a certin date they must wait for?)

I think it's anytime. remember, we traded Mookie/pick to GS for #10 a few days before the draft.

I think since we've had the draft lottery, a trade can go down any minute.

I thought we were prevented from trading our pick for a player since we gave away next year's pick. If so, does that affect our ability to trade down as well?

This is partly correct. I am not sure exactly when the other teams can do it, I think it's as soon as the season is over.

For us, if we're trading for another first rounder, we can do it once the season's over, because the trade will still leave us with a first rounder. However, if we are trading without getting a 1st rounder back for this year, we have to wait til we draft. We are not allowed to trade our pick, but we can trade the rights to the player we draft. So for instance we could go ahead and agree "under the table" that we're going to trade the pick for David West for instance. On draft day they tell us who to draft, and 5 minutes later we trade his rights for West.

That may be true, but that rule is so.... vague.

I mean, can't we argue that there's still a possibility that we keep next year's pick?

I wonder if there's an amendment pertaining to protected picks.

If the pick was top 17 protected, couldn't we make a trade this season?
