Why the heck aren't we going after Maggete???

A-town Hawks

Recommended Posts

Maggette is surely out of LAC, but he's not getting the big money offers from anywhere as he imagined when he first opted out. Alot of us wouldn't mind having a upgrade at the SF position over marvin, and alot of us were furious when we didn't pounce on the opportunity to aquire Richard Jefferson as Milwaukee stole them. Well it looks like were doing again, missing a golden opportunity upgrade or team offensively and defensively.

Maggette will bring that efficient 2nd option JJ needs every night, he shoots a good FG% and his game is the perfect complement to JJ's as RJ's was. As JJ is a finesse guy who loves to hit pullup jumpers and three's, Maggette is a power player who slashes hard and gets the other team in foul trouble. And that quick foul trouble can really help our Bigs smoove and Horford get to the line more often.

Here's my trade scenarios that will surely beat all the title contender who are just offering the mid-level.

Trade 1: Marvin williams and Speedy Claxton

for

SnT Corey Maggette 4year/40mil

Trade 2: SnT Josh Childress 3year/24mil

for

SnT Corey Maggette 4year/34mil

The problem with that scenario is the Clippers no longer need a Marvin or chillz. Unless the Hawks were to take back Cuttino Mobley. With Eric Gordan, Mobley, Thortan and Kurt Thomas the Clippers now need help at the PF and back up C spots. Chillz could serve in a back up role but he would affect there other young talents minutes. If they don't get Brand back there entire off season may be a failure. He takes them from being last years GS to at least the 7th spot in the west.

I think he meant Tim Thomas

Someone else may know this for sure but I don't think a SNT is possible as he became an unrestricted FA when he opted out and there's no incentive/ benefit for him to sign with the Clips.

We have not spent up to the cap yet, so we can't use our exception yet.

However, we're log jammed at the three spot even after we've signed up to the cap. I suppose that some team with good playoff chances but more money than the MLE exception will sign Maggette.

That is not correct. For one, we are currently over the cap with all of our capholds (the Joshes and Jeremy). Also, you don't magically get the MLE once you spend up to the cap. Every team is given the MLE at the beginning of each offseason, but it comes with a caphold. So if you are under the cap by more than the MLE you renounce it because you have no need for it and you can sign players to larger contracts if you do not have a caphold for the MLE. But if you are under the cap by less than the MLE, then you do not renounce it because its caphold will take you over the cap and it is in your best interest to be able to sign players with the MLE rather than with your capspace since your capspace is less than the MLE.

Its hard to read but our salary for 2008-2009 is 51,747,507 according to Hoopshype. The amount by Josh Smith and Josh Childress represents the qualifying offer made by the team to activate the restricted status for the two players.

Their Qualifying Offer is not their caphold. Their capholds are both 300% of their previous salary:

Chill = $10,894,347

Smoove = $6,730,629

30. How much do free agents count against their team's salary cap?

The free agent amount depends on the player's previous salary and what kind of free agent he is:

Kind of free agent Previous salary Free agent amount

Any

Minimum salary

Portion of minimum salary not reimbursed

by the league (see question number 11)

Larry Bird, except when coming off rookie scale contract At least the average salary 150% of his previous salary*

Larry Bird, except when coming off rookie scale contract

Below the average salary 200% of his previous salary*

Larry Bird, following the fourth season of his rookie

scale contract

At least the average salary

250% of his previous salary*

Larry Bird, following the fourth season of his rookie

scale contract Below the average salary 300% of his previous salary*

Larry Bird, following the third season of his rookie

scale contract Any The maximum salary the team can pay

the player using the Bird exception

Early Bird, following the second season of his rookie

scale contract

Any The maximum salary the team can pay

the player using the Early Bird exception

Early Bird (all others)

Any

130% of his previous salary*

Non-Bird Any 120% of his previous salary*

* Not to exceed the player's maximum salary, based on years of service (see question number 11). If the difference in salary between the last two seasons of the player's contract exceeded $4 million, then the percentage is based on the average salary in the last two seasons of the contract.

A restricted free agent counts against his team's salary cap by the greatest of:

His free agent amount (as defined in the table above)

The amount of his qualifying offer (see question number 36)

The first year salary from any offer sheet the player signs with another team (see question number 36)

Here's an example of how to use this chart: Let's say a player who made $5 million during the previous season becomes an Early-Bird free agent, and is not coming off the second season of his rookie scale contract. According to this chart, the player's free agent amount is 130% of his previous salary. So $6.5 million is included in his team's team salary while he is a free agent.

See question number 41 for more information on rookie "scale" contracts, question number 33 for information on renouncing players, and question number 36 for information on restricted free agency.

No, $69 Million:

http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/da...aries/hawks.jsp

Bibby $15 mil

JJ $14.2 mil

Speedy $5.8 mil

Marvin $5.6 mil

Al $4 mil

Zaza $4 mil

Acie $2 mil

Solomon $.8 mil

Total: $51.4 mil

Cap holds:

Chilldress $10.9 mil

Smoove $6.7 mil

Richardson $.5 mil

Roster spot $.4 mil

Total: $18.5 mil

Roster and Capholds: $51.4 mil + $18.5 mil = $69.9 mil

I guess you could say $70 mil and call me wrong, but that should roughly be our cap situation right now. Mr. H has a much more detailed description of our cap situation though so he could always chime in and clarify.
