KAMPALA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The 2000 Olympic gold medalist with the "Dream Team "of American Steve Smith is in the Uganda's capital city to train local basketball players.

The former NBA star, who featured for Miami Heat, Portland Blazers, San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks in his 14 years of playing professional basketball, told a press conference at Serena Hotel on Tuesday that he will also scout talent at the 2010 Sprite Slam Camp.

Smith together with some local coaches will use the 2010 Sprite Slam Camp where the top three players will be selected following intensive process that will lead them to join the "All African Team" and also pay visit to the home of NBA in America.

Smith who also won the 1994 world championships with the American team said even with the limited facilities, Ugandan players can make it to the top if they dream big. He urged the players to capitalize on the opportunity given by Sprite Slam and sharpen their skills in the game.

He further encouraged the players to stay focused on their dream, and even if they do not get selected to go to the home of NBA and be included in the "All African Team", they are still good enough to play for the best teams in the country and in the continent.

Smith started his training work with a group of local coaches on Tuesday to sieve out the best three from 100 participants at the YMCA Wandegeya courts. The lucky boys will join others from Tanzania, Kenya, Angola and Mozambique on the "All Africa Team". They travel to Washington DC next month for a 10-week training camp with Coca-Cola funding the trip expenses under their Sprite brand.
