Tanking 101...best here

"Tanking" means different things for different teams.

The true-est definition of tanking means - losing as many games as possible to get the best draft pick.

This coming season is especially seductive for a team on the downturn since there are (by many pundit's accounts) FIVE incoming players who have the talent to really turn a team around.

So in this season we not only have the regular "sucky" teams going for the bottom - we also have teams like Boston and L.A.

Your traditional "suck" teams (like Charlotte) are now in competition with teams that have consistently beat then out on their attempts to get good - why would one think the same teams couldn't beat them out on getting bad?

The post 2014 season F/A and draft will be the biggest availabilty of top-level talent in recent times (Big-5...possibly LeBron..others) and will likely "set" the league for the next 5 years or so.

Top market teams like the Celtics/LAL will go in with a two-pronged approach...tank for a top 5 draft pick - then use your cap space to bring in top level F/A's.

Lesser market teams will not be in the running for the top level F/A's but can still compete for the "Big 5".

Teams stuck in the middle (without the capability to lure in top level F/A's and draft picks not in the 1-5 range will simply be on a treadmill and will have mssed out.
