Again... Dion vs. Ira?

Everybody keeps talking about Ira... Defensive Specialist.

I say don't close the book on Dion. Last yr he was hampered by a bad foot. Caused him to be a bit slower. This yr..... We might see Scoring and Defense come together in Dion.

Dion seemed to be working harder on D but Hill still seemed to be able to get where he wanted to and then elevate and shoot over Glove. Of course Hill is 6-8 and Glove is 6-5 so that is not necessarily indicative of what will happen against other players.

I think Dion truly WANTS to defend well now whereas I don't think that he cared that much about his D in the past. If he gets better at anticipating what the offensive player wants to do rather than reacting to the player AFTER he has made his move, I think he'll be a lot better.

Dion did a good job on offense. He didn't have many (if any) plays ran for him but he knocked down the open shot when the Magic tried to help on Reef or Big Dog and he rebounded well. Whoever plays SG for us is likely to get a lot of open looks and they have to be able to convert. Glove did that last night.

I have to disagree with this statement. In the past, Dion was considered a good defensive player. Namely two yrs ago. In fact, it was two yrs ago when we played Orlando and it came down to Tmac vs. Glover and the last shot and Glover didn't allow him to score by staying in front of him. Everyone raved about his consistent defense then. I think what has happened was that Dion has had foot problems and it has hampered his quickness. But I don't think that he has lost the desire to play good defense.

In the SG article on RealGM, Dion told me that the reason he his rep went from good to real bad was that he concentrated too much on the offensive end and not enough on improving the footwork, lateral movement, and quickness needed to get his defense up to a level that would get him back on the floo.

He said that he has worked with coaches and trainers over the last summer to do so, and wants to get his rep up to where Ira's is.

He never onece mentioned the injuries, just his prep....So, kudos to Dion for stepping up and understanding andd trying to correct his issues instead of accepting them....

but one game does not make him a great defender. By the way, I don't know who "everyone" is but I have never raved about Dion's CONSISTENTLY good defensive play. How could I, he has not played consistently since he's been in the NBA! Dion has never been consistent offensively, let alone defensively. In addition, I don't recall hearing Dion talk about having the desire to be a great defender until Jay's recent interview with him.

I'm sure that his foot problems had an impact on his lackluster D but I don't think his foot problems are the only problems. Like I said, I don't think he anticipates what his opponent wants to do very well. I think he reacts AFTER the guy makes a move. I liked his effort last night but he has a ways to go before I'll even think about mentioning him in the same breath defensively with Ira.

Both Glover and Newble go to the hoop.

Newble does especially well moving without the ball, and usually tries to get open for an easy hoop.

Glover, as we all know, thrives on driving to the basket...

If anything, the one thing we don't have from the SG position is the 3 point threat, though Glover looked good on the mid range shots last night....
