Philly wants Ratliff, SEA wants cap room?

This trade works salary wise, it has the basis of my trade from yesterday...

PHI gets: Ratliff/CC/Davis

SEA gets: Coleman/Tmac

ATL gets: Anderson/James

1.PHI wants Ratliff, gets rid of Tmac's contract

2.SEA gets a few big men and still keeps some cap flexibility

3.ATL gets a future cap flexibility in KA and an adequate big man in James

wouldn't really help our cap situation. We are already over the cap and we have yet to sign JT. Even if we resigned JT to a deal starting at the middle class exception (I think he'll get a little more than that), we won't have any cap room left after signing him. Basically, we would be giving Theo away for James.

Right now, the salary cap is a little over $40 million and the team pays right at $55 million in salary. Even if we lost the entire $13 million in salaries of Theo, CC and Davis (We wouldn't because James has a $4.5 million salary so we would actually save only $8.5 million), we'd STILL be over the cap BEFORE we tried to sign JT!

Next year, Reef, Dog, Hendu, Nazr, CC and DD will put us over the cap at a combined salary of just over $40 million. That doesn't even include Theo's salary or the money we will need to resign JT (and possibly DG). We are not looking at any real salary cap relief unless we trade TWO of the big four salaries for ending contracts or until Reef, Dog, Hendu and Theo become FA's in 05/06.

Making the proposed trade MIGHT allow us to avoid paying the luxury tax but it won't give us any cap room and it certainly won't make us better.

Over the Cap and over the Luxury tax barrier are 2 different things.

The Luxury tax is expected to be around 55 million next yr.

We lose about 9 million dollars in Salary, we're at about 46 million dollars. That's enough to afford a 3 million dollar change in JT's salary plus pay SAR, Big Dog their increases.

Also, don't forget... We lose the salaries of Ham, Ira, DJ, Glover... Next yr.

So, trading Theo, CC, and Davis and getting Anderson/Lewis works....

Well have enough money to pay our "stars" and to make some cheap Signings like Anderson/SMith for the Vet Min... and maybe one more player from the draft.

We will not be as good immediately following the deal and the long term prospects are no better. Right after the deal:

Nazr/James

SAR/Hendu/Ham

Dog/CC

Dion/Ira

JT/Anderson/DD

Next year:

Nazr/James

SAR/Hendu

Dog/CC

????/????/draft pick

JT/DD

We would be over the cap with only our excpetions available and we wouldn't have even acquired a starter for a former All Star. We couldn't use the full MCE without entering luxury tax land.

Say we did sign Smitty and Anderson to veteran's minimum contracts. How good do you think we would be? The object of a trade should be to get better immediately or to improve prospects for the future. This deal does neither. We'd be better off trading Theo for Derrick Coleman straight up and not taking back James' salary if we were just trying to clear cap room.

We are a team built for offense.

We need good PG play.

For about 1/2 of the game, we can play:

Anderson, JT, BD, SAR, Nazr

and do both things.

The other half, we can run lineups with JT at PG and Glover/Benjamin at SG or KA, DD as PG, Glover, CB as SG... and we would accomplish our goals.
