coachx
When the season ended and all these coaching prospects were without jobs i was a huge proponent of keeping both the staff and the players together for another year to build on the continuity and strong finish showed in the 2nd half of last year. Of course no one expected it to take this long to find direction for the team but it is not turning out that bad especially since JT's resigning now seem imminent. Payers agents now have a face to talk to in free agent signings. Lets face it no agent could take Knight seriously until he signed his 2 year extension. What if 2 months ago you heard the Hawks dumped Dog and drafted an unselfish point foward to replace him at sf. I bet 99% of us would have been estatic. Most of us agreed Dog was bad for team chemistry on offense (black hole) as much as defense (sleeper). Now what if we bring back Glover to keep continuity in the teams starting lineup. Glover can be a 3rd scoring oprion, he has the natural scorers mentality and his all around improved last year. (Remember the Hawks under Stotts and with a slowed down Dog finished with the east's 4th best record after the allstar break. So this bit about Stotts commands no respect from the team is ludicrous, especially considering how the team played better without Dog (their leading scorer). With this continuity and the subtraction of selfishness and no defense (Dog) and the addition of a point foward who is a defensive specialist (Diaw) this team could be better than last years team. So really what team would you rather have permitting Glover is back, this team or the old Hawks team? JT/Dickua Glover/Hansen Diaw/Crawford Reef/Hendu Theo/Nazr Room for 2 more players, probably Smith, DJ, Ham, or Jackson. I know Ham is climsey but his defense and strength will be needed at sf, especially since Crawford is never healthy.
TheDude
i can be optimistic coachx and say we could make the playoffs.. but i still think we need a decent free agent in here to help out a bit. our roster is some people short so I think we should definitely look to bring in a 2nd tier free agent(if any are left) or trade for battier.. i know everyone's been on the battier tip for awhile and i'm not about to be against it.. i really feel if knight can swing something for battier, it would be an extreme boost to our team. we may not have super scorers, but the passing would be much better with diaw and battier and dickau coming back with more experience.. Premium Member Diesel Posted August 12, 2003 Premium Member Report Share Posted August 12, 2003 Very optimistic, but what needs to be pointed out is that Diaw is 6'5 205. He's not big or strong enough to play SF. While Glover can play SF, he usually has his worse games playing it. Plus, Glover will probably be signed by Denver soon. Boondocks
make that 6'8" 203 http://www.nba.com/draft2003/profiles/DiawRiffiodBoris.html
Premium Member Diesel Posted August 12, 2003 Premium Member Report Share Posted August 12, 2003 Oh, my bad... 6'8 203. Still not big enough. That means that Bender is bigger than Diaw.
Boondocks
Well Bender might be bigger, but Marion for instance, who is a comparable player regarding athleticism, is just 6'7".
Premium Member Diesel Posted August 12, 2003 Premium Member Report Share Posted August 12, 2003 No, Marion is closer to 215-220. Diaw is only 203.
HawkTodd
I got these from ESPN.com Some of the players heights and weights that had been mentioned in this thread: Boris Diaw-Riffiod = 6'8", 203 Jonathan Bender = 7'0", 219 Shawn Marion = 6'7", 215 Personally I think to much emphasis is put on positions. Put me 5 guys out there that can play and I'll be happy. Of course you need players that have different roles. But does it really matter if a player is at the 2 or the 3. Look at Ben Wallace, if you just looked at his height you would not think he would lead the league in rebounding.
cyman3
"Put me 5 guys out there that can play and I'll be happy." - i agree... a basketball player is a basketball player. Give me 1 guy that rebounds like crazy, 1 guy that is an inside force, 1 guy that shoots like no other, 1 guy that can run and dish with the best of them, and 1 guy that can do a little of everything but isint GREAT at anything (SF) and im happy... as long as all of them play defense of course. KB21
Bender is bigger than a lot of small forwards. The guy is 6-11.
