Instead of trying to give JJ the max offer which is clearly the wrong decision bc he's not close to being worth that much money, we should wait and see wat eastern conference teams stack up on superstars. We already have the Celtics, Magic, and if the Heat/Bulls/Knicks end up with the top tier free agents there is no way our roster with an overpaid JJ is going to win anything in the postseason. If that happens we should jus start rebuilding and focus the team around Smoove and Horford. We have Teague, Crawford, JC2, Marvin, Smoove, Horford, and bring Childress back. We could use Crawford as trade bait along with Bibby and Zaza to get younger players or draft picks and free up cap space. JJ is NOT a franchise player, he is at best the 2nd or 3rd option on a championship team and being stuck for 5+ yrs with a player earning money as a superstar who isnt def is wrong!!! If we do end up resigning JJ we should trade him for younger players bc he isnt the answer for this team to be a legit contender.

Here's the real quick and dirty of what we have.

If we don't sign JJ and let him walk.. We have 7 million dollars to spend on a FA.

Bibby, Marvin, and Zaza are not tradable.

Smoove, Craw, and Horf are tradable.

Craw will not get Zaza, Bibby, or Marvin traded. Craw is an expiring and a team will not give up much for an expiring and a bad contract. Maybe Bibby because his contract is up next year, but not likely.

About JJ.

JJ is a 4 time allstar, he has led our team in scoring and assists for the last 5 years. He has played in a terrible offense but with that he was still the focus of the defenses we faced. JJ therefore makes other players better not only because of his passing but also because of his ability to draw the defense. We have been spoiled by having good play. If we lose JJ, we will have a team full of Jokers who cannot create for themselves and are dependent on a PG to lead them. Plus, none of these jokers can play while being focused on by the defense except Craw... and we don't want Craw to start feeling like he must be the scorer.... revisit Chicago, NY, and GS for an explanation. Craw is perfect as a sidekick.

Actually Zaza has a very reasonable contract for a solid backup big man

I think Marvin has more value then you think. His contract is not bad and he has a lot of talent. He had an off season but he might flourish this year in a new offensive scheme (bringing his value up).

Bibby will be tradable next year (his last year of his contract but no one will take him this year).

Let's be honest, Zaza is not a very good player. If he was any good the team would not be in dire need of a back-up big man. Zaza is a decent rebounder and hustle guy but he lacks athletic ability and skill, making him an inefficient offensive player and average defender only on his best days.

You won't be able to have a proper rebuild if you have Smith, Horford, Marvin, Teague, and Crawford on the team. You won't be bad enough to realistically have a shot at a top pick in the draft. So that leaves rebuilding by hoping one of your players explodes into a star (which I think could happen with JJ) or hope that you can trade for a star and build the team via fa, which isn't a smart thing to do.
