NBA should somehow tie this back to the fans. Have each team have a fan "sponsor".

To give the players something or someone to play for outside of themselves, have the "sponsor" of the winning team receive 1 million and be a part of the winning team's celebration.

Attempting to build on that... (and this, partially b/c you really could run into some unintended consequences if the winner turned out to be some ultra-political half-brain, right?... so you need to insulate yourself to the degree you can from that... )

Community nonprofits from the metropolitan area should get to nominate one of their most valued volunteers, and the team places its own criteria on what it requires... but all of the nominees are kept confidential until the final two teams are set, and at that point, both teams hold a drawing to establish what nonprofit and what volunteer are the "sponsors."

Half million goes to the charity itself, and half million goes to the volunteer.
