  1. (a little late, i know), i don't consider kurt cobain and jimi hendrix on the same level whatsoever, just that i don't think that either of them are overrated. i guess if someone thinks nirvana was the greatest band ever and left work early when cobain died, then yes, they way overrated him. the general (more sane) public opinion of him isn't so much overrated though, imo. it was a great band, paricularly their early indie stuff and the "in utero" album (nevermind was too commercial/pop for me). my apologies for stopping short of calling jimi earth shattering, but i did say he was extraordinary and deserved the respect he has gotten. i do consider him to be in the upper-most echilons of the rock n roll demi-gods, but i guess our ideas of earth shattering are different. don't ask me who or what i would consider to be at that level, because i don't even know right now. it would have to be like inventing the wheel or harnessing fire for the first time kind of thing to be earth shattering to me.
  2. hotatl, i like reading a lot of things you write, but connecting school shootings to grunge? come on, man. i think it's pretty rediculous to blame school shootings on grunge, or marylin manson , or gang violence on rap, or (remember when...)suicide on judeas priest, or satanism on secret messages encoded on black sabbath and led zep. albums, played backwords, etc, etc, etc. the thing is, if someone thinks that "music" made them commit violent or fatal acts on others, chances are they had other--and much more serious--issues that they were dealing with other than just what music they were listening to.
  3. ...and i'm pretty sure time warner has some african-american shareholders.
  4. i wouldn't have any qualms with trading salim. like him fine, but he's not a major piece of the puzzle imo. at 6'2, wouldn't steele become the tallest between speedy, lue, and himself? i wouldn't consider him to be a small point, but maybe average. he's a pretty defensively minded player, so i wouldn't think of it being a big deal matching him up with any other pg at 6'4 and under. you won't find too many teams with both guards 6'5 and over playing at the same time. btw, i didn't care too much when jt left, either. i liked him for the most part, though he was a bit of a defensive liability. he also seemed to [censored] and whine a little too much his last year or so in atl (getting tired of losing, ego setting in). too bad they drafted diaw to play along with him to balance out the size issue, but never allowed enough time for them to fully work it out together. we all know how that ended up. once jt was gone, there wasn't much of a need for diaw to hang around given what he was playing like while still here. i am glad they both have found success since leaving, but i'm glad they're gone.
  5. with our current roster, i would have to go with howard. although, if it would be guaranteed wade would still get all the calls his way by the refs like he was getting last year (esp. in the playoffs), then i would seriously have to consider wade.
  6. it's so hard to tell so early. though, i've heard rumors that bk has already promised one player he'd pick him in '07 if he declares for the draft ! i've seen tiago splitter listed as high as 3, and as low as the mid twenties (if he doesn't pull out of the draft AGAIN). personally, if we don't trade for a young pg, i'd like to see the hawks draft one to be groomed under speedy for the last couple of years of his contract. i'd be looking for ron steele out of alabama, possibly even dominic james out of marquette. steele would seem more steady and defensive, whereas james is a little smaller, but flashier and faster point. we added a couple bigs with the last draft, and got our 2/3/4s with jj and the two drafts before the last, now would be a good time to pick up a true point.
  7. i don't know how under the radar they are, they've been slowly coming up over the last dozen years or so, but a band i would consider one of the most underrated would be The Roots. i've got their first five albums and i think they've got a couple more on top of that. they were the house band on the dave chappele block party movie, i believe (never actually saw it). they're hip hop, but a serious collection of musicians. one of the only groups i've seen that can succefully pull off playing hip hop as a live band (drums, keys, bass, guitar, razel the sound effects master, etc.). seen them live a number of occations and loved it everytime. other lesser known hip hop i really dig is planet asia, lyrics born, blackalicious, bahammadia, mos def (not really unknown now, i guess). i really like a lot of underground rock, too, though i'm a little more behind in that. jucifer from athens is real good, very hard. i miss living in atl and listening to album 88.5 (gsu's radio) and the gt radio stations. great places for picking up lesser know music of any sort.
  8. Quote: It's funny when you think how teams always prove these jackasses wrong year after year, making them look so stupid. fortunately for the media, and most of the people who follow them, they have very short memory spans. they don't count on anyone bringing up at the end of the season their projections and prognostications. if the hawks suck, they won't change, and they'll keep making fun of them. if the hawks don't suck, then they will just make fun of whomever lost to the hawks. until the hawks put together a couple of good years, they'll never get any respect for who they are or what moves they make.
  9. born cincy, oh; grew up louisville, ky; moved to atl (decatur and east point); back in the 'ville again. miss the dirty-dirty. radio sucks here.
  10. i find neither of them to be overrated. neither of them are the most precise, tightly cut musicians, but then that's not what all of music is about. both of them are able to evoke strong feelings through their performances, and when dealing with many of those feelings, precision doesn't can't fully express what's going on inside. just because it's different from popular forms of music doesn't make it any less of a talent. i'm an artist, and i could draw photographic depictions of things all day long, but that doesn't say as much to me that i want people to get from my work. the great thing about both jimi and kurt is that they were able to bring their "new" styles to a large mass audience and have it appreciated. nirvana wasn't that groundbreaking, it was dirived from punk that had been around since the mid/late 70's. nirvana got mtv and airtime, though, and got some folks to expand their horizons. jimi was very similar. he pulled from a lot of past blues, gosspil, etc. with an added edge and brought it out to the mass (i.e. white) audience, expanding their horizons as well. neither of them were earth shattering, but both were extaordinary in their own way and deserve their respect.
  11. i could do just as well as them flipping a coin. wish i could get a job like theirs'.
  12. it seems, generally speaking, each team in the nfc south has their own personal b*#ches, and are similarly another team's b*#ch. the falcons have always handled the panthers well (except when vick admittedly quit on the team late last season), but they have been the buc's rag doll. carolina seems to do well against the bucs, and the saints either split or lose to everyone else. this is a great season opener for the dirty birds, particularly winning over many pundits' "it" pick for the super bowl. let's hope they show up well against the bucs and get that monkey off their back!
  13. it seemed to me that the texans didn't draft reggie bush for fears of being unable to sign him for what he would've asked for. idiots.
  14. Quote: How about Sheldon for a Klondike bar? or Lue for Shaq and Wade? mmmmmm.....klondike bar. now that sounds good.
  15. Quote: saw it a few months ago and thought it was an odd ad until you see any of the many other variations on it, many of which have the roles reversed in one way or another. It's just marketing and not worhty of comments such as "insensitive" or "inappropriate". i agree the variations do seem to make it a little less nazi-esque, but really--as much money, research, and feedback advertising firms throw out on this stuff, there is no way they could've been ignorant to such a reaction to this campaign, particularly if that is the main image they were spreading around, without giving the others equal play. i think that if they had replaced the dark woman with a man, then nothing like this would've come up. it would've been viewed more as some kind of big sexual tension as opposed to a battle between two equals (women) whose only noticable difference is their skin tones. i guess that isn't what they were going for, though, and they're the idiots who have to stand behind their divisive propaganda.
  16. like i said, i didn't care for the pick. it isn't what i would've done. ideally, i would've liked to trade down and tried to somehow get rondo (someone who actually DID workout in atl before the draft) and sene. i have no idea how likely that could've been, but yeah, it would've been nice to get a pg and c instead of a pf. however, i haven't seen sheldon play nba yet, and he had a good college career. i will reserve complete judgement until after he has been around the way a while. he could be blocking the way for our other players (which is why i wouldn't have taken him), but he could turn out to be something nice for us (which is why i won't completely dog him -- yet).
  17. i didn't care too much for the pick, but i'm not pissed at it either. honestly, i don't think this was that great of draft class, regardless of who we got where. i don't think roy or foye will be exceptional superstars for years to come, either. if there is some great superstar to come out of this draft, it will probably be someone that comes out of nowhere that wasn't a top five, or even ten, pick. your guess is as good as mine. this draft seemed pretty weak to me and the sheldon pick, along with everything else, was pretty anticlimactic to me. no use crying over missing out on hardly anyone in this past draft, imo.
  18. Quote: We can "move past it" all we want but BK's still here making mistake after mistake. okay, sure. i'm not all hugged up on bk's nutz, but let's at least bash him for the mistakes that he's done within the last month. with so many to choose from, it seems pretty ocd to keep going back to the same one over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over...... i think you have very well reflected on the complexity of reasons for drafting or not drafting sheldon in like your last billion posts. i'm sure there have been other polls over whether anyone liked/didn't like the pick. i could look that up to double check if it's happened, but really i'm too lazy to look it up, plus, i could really care less to find out the results. i didn't care for the pick, either. but damn, boston red sox fans have let go of the babe ruth trade faster than you have with this draft.
  19. HANNO! HANNO! HANNO! HANNO! we seriously need to bring him back.* *just kidding--but seriously--just kidding (seriously).
  20. Quote: Like less of "...". i'll ditto that. seriously oken, you've been watching too much anime. reading that last post made me feel like i was listening to some capcom video game character talking to me. nothing personal though.....hahahahah.
  21. Quote: 1) He will not remain with the team past his rookie contract should he have no chance to start in his future. 2) We have more pressing needs than a 3rd string Sf and trading him (with something else) MIGHT acquire a quality center prospect. i would be less inclined to trade chillz. unless we get an amazing two-way center that would allow us to keep smoove and marvin on the floor together at the same time like walter has been begging for, then i would be more inclined to trade js or mw (probably js) than chillz. i know that i may sound crazy saying that, however....our biggest problem is the redundancey of marvin and smoove both wanting/needing to play at small forward. unless js develops more of a power forward's game, then one of them will be on the bench more than they should, and only one of them can be a starter. one of chillz strengths, that the other two don't have so much, is his versatility. i also don't believe that he ever will be a serious starter for any team for any length of time in this league. if the hawks can't work out a way for both our star small forwards to be on the floor together, then either one or both of them will be unhappy at not getting enough starts/playing time, or we trade one of them for something that we really need (like a major upgrade at center or point). smoove or marvin would net us something much larger and benificial than anything childress would ever get us. he is a perfect 6th man (which is what he will primarily ever be imo), getting really good minutes splitting time at forward and guard--why mess with that and lose it? we could trade him, get another bench player, lose some depth, and have two unfulfilling small forwards, or we trade one high-potential small forward for a great starting 1 or 5, still have a great, high-potential 3, plus jj at 2, plus a great 6th man to rotate around in myriad of different sets. blast me if you must--and i know some must, but i see this as a battle of between mw and js, and either they adapt their roles, or only one, and ONLY one, comes out on top.
  22. Quote: One more thing. I love to root for the underdog so I am hoping that Solomon may be a sleeper for us. A young Theo Rattliff in the making. Would also love to see Esteban evolve into a good role player. being so early, there's no telling what will happen. i'm really pulling for solomon and el toro, too. even if solomon is playing for the nbdl this year, he'll be ready to play for the hawks by this time next year (let's hope). it would be nice to pick up a great big, but honestly, i wouldn't be disappointed one bit if we picked up r. steele, pg from alabama in the next draft. some mock drafts out now show that we could possibly get him in the area of the pacer's pick to us without having to do anything (i.e. trade up, which billy hasn't had any luck doing in past drafts). how sad is it that the '06 season hasn't even started yet, and we're already trying to make our picks for the '07 draft?
  23. branch the patriots just gave dion branch a week to seek a trade and negotiate a new contract. i bet the falcons are kicking themselves for trading t.j. duckett for lelie already. with cory dillon wearing down, i'm sure the patriots would've traded for him. i suppose there's a slight chance they could still get him, but i doubt they will go out and do it, now.
