Batista = Mark Madsen.

Thats a great anology! thumb3d.gifIn the NBA you only need to master one skill and be above average in every other aspect. If Solomon Jones can become a shot blocking specialist he will play in the NBA a long time. His rebounding and jump shot must be above average for it to happen though.Esteban Batista always reminded me of a human bowling ball when he got into the game.He looked much more relaxed and fluid in the FIBA championships than I have ever seen him in a Hawks uniform.Watching those games just made me realize this guy is just suited more for the international game than the NBA.Although I believe he could show alot more if he got away from Mike Woodson. As far as upside goes:

Solomon Jones>Esteban Batista

I to believe sometimes stats can be overrated and misleading. If you know the game you can watch it and observe who is a player and who is not. Stats can't take into account hustle, heart, and determination. That is up to the coach to figure who has these qualities and put them in the right position. Is Mike Woodson the guy to do so might be the greater debate.

well lets see...

i remember seeing at the beginning of last season in the newspaper how 'Esteban is the most feared Hawk in practice'...

which i didnt quite understand, until his reckless play took out Joe Johnson for the remainder of the season

I dont think he will be back for that reason alone lol

Go Hawks!

where is the proof of this? I keep hearing people say it, but I never saw an article. Is it just speculation, because how did Batista injure JJ's calf?

Umm, schooled arguably the best NBA team ever assembled. Does that count?

What has he done in the NBA???? Heck Carlos Arroyo look like a world beater in international play!! Solo has performed in an NBA game!! When has Batista?

Well to be fair he hasn't had much of a chance has he. Look I'm not saying he's better than Solo, I'm just saying there is an argument for it.

I must've missed that game.

No wonder your opinion on the two is skewed. He put up some very impressive numbers against the U.S. team recently. Better numbers than solo ever put up against an NBA team, much less an NBA All-Star team.

Again, not saying Batista is better, simply saying that it is a legit argument.

Far less than 50% of the players in the NBA meet this definition.

Your comment makes me think of a conversation I had at Run N Shoot last weekend.Someone was telling me about how Courtney Alexander came in one day and dominated. He said a guy who rode the bench in the NBA came in and dominated in the gym that day.He said his speed and quickness was to great for anyone to guard him. This has been true for lesser known college players who I have played against and watched play as well. Please do not disrespect a professional players skills becuase they do not show it in the game like a star or superstar.Chances are they were a star in there High School and college. These players are far better than you give them credit for. What seperates Kwame Brown from Chris Bosh is consistency and commitment to be great. But Kwame is one of the best players in the world because he is in the league. He just lacks the will to ever be great.

How many years did Manute Bol play in the league? Are you suggesting he didn't belong in the league at all? Once again someone is disrespecting a player who made it to the NBA.I don't think some of you know how hard it is to do.Respect Manute because he made it not me or any of you!!!!!!

If I were Batista, I would get my agents to try and angle me towards Utah or Phoenix or Golden State or San Antonio.... which would have to be the most preferred destination of them all. The Spurs have had great success with foreign players, and I could just see Este going there and becoming a valuable contributor on that team.

Here? It seems he will never be given a real opportunity, so what would be the point in him coming back?

I don't doubt any of what you just said.

I thought when you were talking about "average" you weren't talking about that in comparison to some guy off the street but were talking about that in comparison to other NBA players.

99% of NBA players are not just above average but are amazing compared to average joes in every facet of the game. Hell, guys like Nate Robinson would probably be incredible shot blockers at the local Y! I would think 99% of players in the CBA would be way more than above average across the board compared to guys at the local gym. I guess I just see that as such a low bar that it goes without saying.

I agree that having one area in which you are a stud in the NBA will probably land you a roster spot.

Everybody ever to make the NBA was/is exceptional, period. Thats what blows me away when some nut calls a guy in the NBA "a bum". All of them are EXCEPTIONAL. All. There are guys at rn-n-shoot that have the talent to be in the NBA, without a doubt.

That was all I was trying to say.Glad we agree on that subject.I just play ball and know the skill you must have to make it in the league.Even the And 1 guys can't get a sniff and Rafaer Alston isn't making it any easier for them to right now. When I say a specific skill it really is the same thing as being a role player. The Hawks players must find what they bring to the team and focus on that.Hopefully the coach will assist them with that and not pigoen hole players(Salim,Sheldon,Marvin) like he has in the past!

Things like elite perimeter shooting, rebounding, shot blocking, etc. can get a player a bench spot in the league in spite of some woeful deficits in other areas of a player's game.

Exactly! cool.gifSteve Kerr would be an example of the perimeter shooting.Dennis Rodman the rebounder and Mutumbo the shot blocker.None of those players were/are great all around but they found what they were good at and mastered it.All except Mutumbo have helped there team win a championship.Mutumbo did help a talent deprived Sixers team reach the finals though. Thats why so many people get so mad mad.gifat Josh smith for shooting threes,ZaZa settling for jumpers and Sheldon/Marvin Williams not being aggressive on the offensive end.Smoove should be dominating down low on slower post players.ZaZa is much better posting up than shooting from the perimeter.Marvin and Sheldon have the capability to score but they must be willing to do so when they get the ball.Although Sheldon must pass out of double teams much better. If the hawks players just look at the successful teams such as the Spurs,MJ's bulls and the Isiahs pistons and learn what they are good at and master it the team will be much better off.Only if Mike Woodson would let Salim be minny vinny and not a point guard. eyebrow.gif

No, you just wrote incorrectly. He put those numbers up against the U.S. team in an international competition, not an NBA team in an NBA game.

Dude are you trying to kill your own argument? Which is really more impressive... Him putting up those numbers against (insert ANY NBA team here)or the NBA ALL Stars that he did put them up against? I don't know about you but it's more impressive to do what he did against the team he did it to than even the Spurs.
