New Coach Possibility just mentioned on 680AM

Buck and Kincaid were talking to the basketball editor from yahoo sports and he mentioned rumours of the Celtics asst coach going to the Hawks.

Anyone else catch that?

Would that be the guy who is in charge of their defense? They gave him a lot of credit on the air during the games.

I assume they are talking about Tom Thibodeau. He coached with Van Gundy in Houston and NYC and is supposedly the defensive guru behind the Celtics and Van Gundy's Knicks.

Not to mention that when Van Gundy coached the Rockets, their defense was ridiculous, too.

Well, if the assistant in question is Thibodeau, then this is his first season with the C's too, and he has been credited with much of the defensive turn around the Cs have experienced.

Most, if not all, the teams he was an assistant coach with (knicks, rockets, now celtics) ranked in the top 5 in defense in the league.

He is an awesome Xs and Os kind of guy, but the question remains as to whether he can effectively lead and motivate NBA players as a head coach. After all, he's been an assistant at the NBA level for almost 20 years, and an assistant at the college level before that, and prior to this year he was never really considered for any head coaching jobs at any level (other than for one year in college in his alma mater, before accepting a post as assistant at harvard). When someone is this successfull as an assistant and no organizations he's worked in ever considered him for HC, you have to question his ability to move from tapes and Xs and Os to actual head coaching a team.

Yes thats him. They said he was the mastermind behind the Celtics great defense.

He was in the poll earlier today and got a little love from voters.

It just seems kind of wierd to hire 2 former assistants in a row from the defending Eastern Conference Champions, and each assistant is credited as their team's defensive master mind.
