24... 24 Blown 4th Quarter Leads

In the 4th it seems as if we start running a 4 corner offense instead of just continuing to play aggressively. We then start trying to feature everyone and it seems to throw everything off. We play much better in the 4th when we feature no one and just move the ball and take good shots .

To me this is sort of like looking at how many blown saves a team has in baseball. You say that the Braves had 21 blown saves last season and it sounds like a big number and that the Braves could have won a ton more games. But thats because when you think of a blown save in your mind you think of it as if those were all ninth inning collapses. But in reality a blown save is given anytime a reliever enters the game and gives up the lead it counts as a blown save no matter what inning it occurs in and 21 blown saves was pretty much middle of the pack.

Well 21 blown saves in 162 games the Braves play, seems like very little compared to 24 in 79 games the Hawks have.

It is comparing apples to oranges, though. There is MUCH more scoring in basketball and many more lead changes in a basketball game than in a baseball game.

  • 2 weeks later...

Portland blew 3 4th quarter leads in that game yet still won. People freaked out when they heard about 24 blown 4th quarter leads for the Hawks but didn't stop to think about what that really meant.

Thanks for clearing that up, I thought that it meant 24 games where they've had fourth quarter leads and lost.

It is irresponsible to refer to a game that is back and forth as a "blown" 4th quarter lead, IMO. That implies that the game was in hand and it was given away...and that it resulted in a loss. I agree with spotatl, jaybird and others who question the meaningfulness of this number.

The real question should be " how many 15-20 point leads have we lost in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

That and some other questions would be a lot more meaningful. If a team is counting the following as two "blown" leads then the stat surely needs more definition to be meaningful:

Start of 4th Quarter

Hawks 70

Suns 87

8:00

Hawks 83

Suns 90

4:00

Hawks 94

Suns 98

2:00

Hawks 102

Suns 101

1:46 - Blown lead?

Hawks 102

Suns 103

0:47

Hawks 105

Suns 104

0:30 - Blown lead?

Hawks 105

Suns 107

0:00

Hawks 108

Suns 112
