Hubie Brown give honest assesment of Hawks on 680

I wish Hubie Brown could be an assistant or "Senior Advisor " to Rick Sund. I'd love to hear Hubie's opinions on the Hawks and who should coach this team behind closed doors. I think he and another "old timer" like Rick Sund could really see eye to eye and get on the same page just as Dimitroff and M. Smith do with the Falcons.

Here is the link, its worth a listen.

Edit - Sorry guys..........it appears like it will be later today , or even tomorrow, until they add this interview to their "interview vault." Every Hawks fan needs to listen to it tomorrow.

I would give a run down of his major points but I would be doing an injustice to Hubie Brown.

Its best to listen to Hubie tell it himself.......as only Hubie can.

I heard the last 10 seconds and hubie said it was a worst case scenario for the hawks to draw the magic they match up poorly with them.

He said a whole lot more then that. He focused on Josh Smith and Joe Johnson for a while and was asked specifically about Woodson's coaching.

I'll wait & let everyone hear Hubie tell his side, as only Hubie can.

While listening to that interview this morning, I couldn't do anything but just shake my head. Hubie Brown has more basketball knowledge in his pinky finger than Woodson has in his entire body. Listening to him break down offense and how it has to change in the playoffs just proves how big of a disadvantage having Mike Woodson as a head coach actually is. Mike Woodson felt as if his system worked fine during the regular season, and he sees no reason to change it in the playoffs. Hubie said that you MUST change your offense in the playoffs because the playoffs are much more difficult than the regular season. Woodson is not smart enough to realize that. Having a coach that doesn't care about offense is not going to cut it when it comes to playoff basketball. I wish Hubie was young enough to coach the Hawks. His basketball IQ is far greater than Mike Woodson's.

I can't listen to streaming at work so can someone summarize his point? I'm curious about what he said.

Did he say if the Hawks should resign Joe or not?

Well, my post above goes into a little bit about what he said. He also mentioned that the switching defense is a problem. One of the most important things that he mentioned was the fact that coaches need to figure out a way to get their top 3 scorers quality shots IN AREAS ON THE FLOOR THAT THEY CAN SCORE IN. He mentioned that just getting a shot is not good enough, because different players have certain areas on the floor where they are more successful. Therefore, getting an open shot in an area on the floor that the player doesn't do well at is NOT a quality shot.

You describe the exact part where I started listening to the interview.

After that he went into how he had never seen a player with that kid of talent (refering to Josh Smith) fail to run down the floor and play defense on 3 consecutive possesions and basically give the Magic 6 points. He was refering to Game 2. The think is that Smith did this in basically every game this series. Where was the Josh that runs down people on the fast break "

The radio guys then asked him about Woody's discipline. Hubie said you really have to see a coach in practice in order to judge that. See how players react to the coaching and see if the coach has the players respect. That is where you see if a guy is a winning player. That is where you see what they are coached to do so one can know whether they are doing what ther are taught in practice during the games.

I was at work before the interview was over. I can't wait until the post it on their web site.

I heard this interview and EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD MUST LISTEN TO THIS INTERVIEW!

Hubie Brown is so on the money wtih EVERYTHING that he said about the Hawks, it's such a shame that the Hawks can't in some

way get this guy's brain on our side. I know he is too old to coach anymore (76) but his basketball knowledge is unmatched and he

knows the Hawks better than anyone. I agree with the previous poster who said he has more knowledge in his little pinky than Woodson

does in his entire pea-sized brain. It's so painful to hear him say the EXACT things and think the EXACT plans that our coach should have

said and employed on the team. He just "gets it"....simple as that.

Hubie Brown is a genius.

I think this is where it will eventually be posted:

Josh was taking out of his game, this typically happens to players who aren't superstars who are taking out of his game. I listened to Josh Smith post game presser. He said something that stood out. He said we didn't know what to take away, Howard or the shooters. The problem was Lewis would go to the three point line and Dwight would post up Horford. Smith is our defensive anchor and if you take him away, you completely weaken the Hawks defense. Horford gave no resistance to Howard because Howard is a much better center than Horford is. In most games, Smith is on Horford backside closing out the paint for the player who Horford is guarding. What Orlando was doing was running their offense through Dwight, he would either attack and score unless Smith was on the backside and if Smith was on the backside he would pass to the guard on the opposite side, and since we were closing in on Dwight as a team, that guard would be open for a second and he would either shoot it or pass it to Lewis for an open three. Not to mention, Jameer was having his way with anyone we put in front of him and Vince Carter is the Hawk killer who is very difficult to guard one on one for any defender.

They took away a big part of our offense by Dwight alone. We had no second chance opportunities which is an extremely big part of our offense since we are a jump-shooting team. Smith's in the paint abilities was taking away by Dwight presence as well as Horford. We really had mismatch issues. It's not like Orlando hasn't killed us during the season and preseason as well.

He is a specialist in the game of basketball. If you could get a Ph.D. in the game of basketball, Hubie would be the professor.

Your points on Lewis taking Smith out of the game were spot on. McHale talked about that issue at length last night. The Hawks best shot blocker was taken out of the game defensively b/c he had to stand around the 3 point line to guard Lewis every night. Josh Smith was only credited for 1 blocked shot the entire series.

His defenses leave a lot to be desired. I love Hubie mind as well. He's really understands how to articulate the game.

OK. I don't understand the point that you're trying to make.

He's a much better offensive mind than Woodson is. But lets not make him out to be the mecca of former NBA coaches. I see members bashing Woody left and right like Hubie would just turn Smith offensive game turn into Kevin Garnett's. Joe turns into Kobe. Marvin with his 10 touches a game and four of them being defensive rebounds would turn into Lebron. Woodson is a very good coach, it's angers me when I see other belittle him like he's Lon Kruger.

I just don't understand how anybody can say that Woody is a very good coach. What exactly is he good at? I don't think he brings anything to the table. The Hawks seriously outclassed Milwaukee in the talent department, and Milwaukee still took the Hawks to 7 games. Orlando outclassed us in the talent department, and the Hawks got absolutely smoked in 4 straight games. If that's not a stinging indictment on Mike Woodson's coaching, then what is?

Atlanta did not come to play in Game 3 from what I seen. The Bucks were smart to put a bunch of small guys on the court to pull Smith out of the paint. Like I stated in another thread. Smith has too much impact in the paint on defense. Second most to only Dwight Howard and is tied with Kevin Garnett. They were pulling him out and attacking with Jennings and shooting anytime someone else had the ball. They play extremely hard and would be tough for anyone except Orlando. As explained in another radio interview thread, I explained the Orlando series.

Well I believe it's up to the coach to react and make adjustments, and Woody didn't do it. Why?

Answer: Because he's a TERRIBLE coach, he can't adjust to situations like that.
