U're welcome Georgia - signed Miami defense

Hmm I didn't realize out of conference games wouldn't affect the standings. It won't matter anyway as UGA won't be in the BCS championship hunt at the end of the season.

They should be if they win out and beat #1 undefeated Bama in the SECCG game. UGA believes they can beat Bama now after coming up 5 yardsd short or 5 seconds short last season. However, Bama has to get by LSU.

Here is what helps UGA vs. Bama compared to last year.

UGA is succesful stopping the run when they can keep their base defense on the field. LSU allows you to do that b/c they play the majority of their run downs with a FB and TE. They are a conventional power run team when rushing the ball.

Bama is a zone block run team. Contrary to popular belief they are not a power run team like LSU. 1/2 of Bama's runs come out of 3 or 4 WR sets and no FB. UGA sucked at stopping the run last season out of spread sets. The reason is the new "Star Position" that is all the rave with college coaches these days when stopping a spread offense..........especially spread offenses with running QBs or who like to run the ball with their RBs out of multi WR sets.

The "Star Position" is basically another name for a nickle back but the desired traits are different...............You want a player big enough to rush the passer and stop the run while also being versitile enough to cover receivers. It really complicates things for a QB calling audibles if you have freak athlete playing the star. Players who can do this effectively are very rare.

This year UGA moves sophomore Josh Harvey Clemons (JHC) from SS to star in alot of nickle defensive looks. He is 6'5'' and 225 lbs with the rare ability to cover, play the run, or rush the passer. Last year UGA was forced to play a conventional CB as the nickle back / star position. He was great at coverage but offenses ran the ball right at him with great success b/c he is only 6' and 190 lbs. He was simply over matched in the run game. Even WRs could effectively block him. Bama did this over and over.

Bama's game plan will be forced to change if the meet UGA in the SECCG this season.

If the 6'5'' and 225 lb JHC played in the Clemson game ( in place of the 5'10'' walk on Connor Norman) UGA would have won the Clemson game. Boyd targeted Norman all game long. Against LSU JHC had 15.5 tackles, 2 TFL, and knocked down 3 passes. We sure could have used that talent on the field in Clemson.
