Everything I've read said that full tear is better than a partial tear in both ease of surgery and long term recovery.

I thought I read somewhere that partial tear could be treated without surgery and had shorter downtime.

He had a partial tear last time. It also depends on the degree of the tear. But either way you are out for quite some time. This is better as it should lead to a complete recovery and we won't have to worry about the torn part re-tearing.

Really, I would have expected the complete opposite. I mean if the pec is partially torn couldn't you tear the rest. Gee I'd make a great doctor!

Yes partial tears are worse. A complete tear is easier to fix. That's why a lot of times doctors will go ahead and completely tear the injury before doing the surgery.
