Gray Mule
Remember that old commercial, "Where's the beef?" Hawk fans should be asking, "Where's the defense?" We all, or the vast majority of us, believe that we now have a real NBA coach. We're told that all these Hawk players get their "vitamins" by getting personalinstructions from one of the assistant coaches. Apparently, each coach hasthe responsibility of nurturing a part of the NBA game to the players and theyare all enthused about this and it shows. Our offense and assists are very good. Do these Hawks have a defensive coordinator? If so, he's not getting the job done.During our losing streak, our defense has been poor to non existant. Who isresponsible for this? Sure, we know Bud is the man and that it ultimately fallson him to take care of everything. Hawks need one assistant coach who is responsible for putting together a defensiveplan for each game and to see that the plan is executed properly. If we have one,he isn't getting the job done and needs to wake up and really go to work. If we don't have a defensive coordinator, we need one. Now. Sure, Bud is the man and it's his responsibility but he's gotta have some help.Sleepwalk and our defense seem to be bed buddies and, speaking of sleepwalk, our offense sure did their thing to start the 4th quarter last night, didn't they! Every team that we have met recently have shot close to their season high infield goal %. If it was one game, we could overlook this but every night we play?? NBASupes
Reality came back. The defense overachieved massively at the beginning but this is more of what I excepted looking at a personnel and the overall talent level. We don't have any defensive minded players outside of DMC who is a 3 &D guy.

Premium Member turnermx Posted March 8, 2014 Premium Member Report Share Posted March 8, 2014 It seems like the guys are going through the motions defensively. Not getting over to help, not getting out on shooters. I believe it started when we had lost defensive presence at C. other positions helped out and left shooters wide open. Effort and intensity is waning. Bud could only do so much to motivate these guys until they succumbed to the injuries. Now I think Mack and Schröder are being evaluated (explanation for crazy lineup anyone? )
noble
This team was never built with the idea they had a great defense. When Horford went out, much of the defense went with him. They did overachieve earlier this year. The best thing this team can do is tank to miss the playoffs. Horford's injury (mind you his second of the same type) is unknown how he will recover and if he will be his former self. This team has lacked defense for a while now, and they need to improve that this offseason. As much as I would like to keep Horford, it might be time to look at some serious trades this offseason.
Moderators macdaddy Posted March 10, 2014 Moderators Report Share Posted March 10, 2014 To me its a team defense thing and when the rotations are all screwed up because of injuries then the team defense will struggle. Plus, I don't think we will ever look good in defensive stats under Bud. I think his strategy is score first, stay in the game or ahead, and try to tighten the D at the end.
