2017 roster outlook

Now that "he" is no longer a Hawk, let's change gears and focus on something that isn't a kick in the teeth. How about we take a look at what we'll look like heading into the 2017 offseason, and how much cap space we might have.

Broken down by position group and contract status in 2017.

Point Guards:

  1. Schröder - Restricted Free Agent - he'll be due a sizeable raise over $2,708,582, with full Bird rights.
  2. Patterson - RFA - small cap hold, can be brought back for cheap most likely, full Bird rights
  3. Possible 2016 PG addition - I assume we'll add one, no idea his 2017 contract status at this point.

Wings:

  1. Bazemore - under contract for $16,910,112
  2. Korver - UFA - made $5,239,437 in 2016. Full Bird rights
  3. Thabo - UFA - made  $3,850,000 in 2016. Full Bird rights
  4. Hardaway - RFA - made  $2,281,605 in 2016. Full Bird rights
  5. Prince - under contract, year 2 of rookie contract around $2m
  6. Bembry - under contract, year 2 of rookie contract around $1.5m
  7. Cordinier - if brought over, will be under contract year 1 of rookie minimum around $600k

Bigs:

  1. Howard - under contract for $23,500,000
  2. Millsap - player option (UFA) -
  3. Splitter - UFA - made $8,550,000 in 2016. Full Bird rights
  4. Tavares - on non-guaranteed contract for $1,014,746
  5. Muscala - UFA - made  $1,015,696 in 2016. Full Bird rights.
  6. Scott - UFA - made $3,333,334 in 2016. Full Bird rights.

I've bolded the players that will be under contract already for the 2017 season. It ain't a lot, is it? At least we have full Bird rights on every single player currently on the roster that could become a free agent in 2017.

Maybe someone with a little more cap knowledge can list everyone's cap holds for 2017 and do a real estimation of how much cap room we could clear.

Capholds  are  150% of current contract ( I think).

2017 Free Agency List:

1. Stephen Curry
Unrestricted / Point Guard / 6-3 / Team: Golden State
The back-to-back MVP hits free agency in 2017 and he's a mortal lock to get a maximum contract. With the Warriors rolling, it's hard to picture him leaving the Bay Area anytime soon.

Agent: Jeff Austin 2015/16 Earnings: $11,370,786 Career Earnings: $56,700,262

2. Russell Westbrook
Unrestricted / Point Guard / 6-3 / Team: Oklahoma City
One of the most athletic and confident point guards we've ever seen. As of now his duo with Kevin Durant is working out pretty well, but a lot can happen in Oklahoma City between today and the summer of 2017.

Agent: Thaddeus Foucher 2015/16 Earnings: $16,744,218 Career Earnings: $94,944,766

3. Blake Griffin
Early Termination Option / Power Forward / 6-10 / Team: LA Clippers
Look for him to opt out and get a humongous deal. With the Clippers' championship window closing, will he look for greener pastures?

Agent: Jeff Schwartz 2015/16 Earnings: $18,862,876 Career Earnings: $96,463,407

4. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Restricted / Small Forward / 6-10 / Team: Milwaukee
Has star written all over him. May not hit free agency as the Milwaukee Bucks will surely try to lock him up with a contract extension next year.

Agent: Alex Saratsis 2015/16 Earnings: $1,953,960 Career Earnings: $8,615,141

5. Chris Paul
Early Termination Option / Point Guard / 6-0 / Team: LA Clippers
Chris Paul is on the wrong side of 30, but suitors will line up for his services regardless. Didn't look like he had a lost a step in 2015-16.

Agent: Leon Rose 2015/16 Earnings: $21,468,695 Career Earnings: $160,388,983

6. Rudy Gobert
Restricted / Center / 7-1 / Team: Utah
One of the best rim protectors in the NBA these days. Utah doesn't come across players this gifted very often, so expect the team to sign him to an extension before the Frenchman hits free agency.

Agent: Bouna Ndiaye 2015/16 Earnings: $1,175,880 Career Earnings: $5,503,368

7. Gordon Hayward
Player Option / Small Forward / 6-8 / Team: Utah
The versatile forward will become a free agent right in the middle of his prime years. Keeping him in Utah will not come cheap.

Agent: Mark Bartelstein 2015/16 Earnings: $15,409,570 Career Earnings: $57,279,893

8. Kyle Lowry
Player Option / Point Guard / 6-0 / Team: Toronto
Had the best season of his career in 2015-16 and you can count on him being one of the premier point guards in the game in 2016-17.

Agent: Andy Miller 2015/16 Earnings: $12,000,000 Career Earnings: $64,757,917

9. Dennis Schröder
Restricted / Point Guard / 6-2 / Team: Atlanta
Has made clear coming off the bench behind Jeff Teague is not the right situation for him. The talented and aggressive Schröder is certainly too good not to be a starter.

Agent: Ademola Okulaja 2015/16 Earnings: $1,763,400 Career Earnings: $7,510,862

10. Danilo Gallinari
Player Option / Small Forward / 6-10 / Team: Denver
Averaged a career-high 19.5 ppg in 2015-16, but staying healthy remains a challenge for him.

Agent: Michael Tellem 2015/16 Earnings: $14,000,000 Career Earnings: $73,398,077

11. Paul Millsap
Player Option / Power Forward / 6-8 / Team: Atlanta
Overachieves year after year. May not have superstar talent, but makes a very noticeable impact on both ends of the court.

Agent: DeAngelo Simmons 2015/16 Earnings: $18,671,659 Career Earnings: $92,110,037

12. Victor Oladipo
Restricted / Shooting Guard / 6-4 / Team: Orlando
Oozes with potential, yet leaves you wanting more. If he finally puts it all together, he's All-Star material.

Agent: Leon Rose 2015/16 Earnings: $5,192,520 Career Earnings: $21,487,440

13. Derrick Rose

Let's get our recruiter Baze out there to talk to Blake Griffin and Gallinari.

Could we bring Cordinier over this year? He's the rookie I'm most excited for.

Pretty sure he already signed a 1 year contract overseas. Plus we already have 6 wings under contract this year, 7 if you include Patterson who can bounce between wing and point guard. It's best he waits until next year when we might lose both Korver and Thabo, perhaps Hardaway too. We already have two rookies to break in on the wing this year in Prince and Bembry.

Actually, Random, I'm not sure of that on Cordinier. As I understood it, he was intending to come over and play with the team that had promised to draft him, then that fell through, and of course we drafted him.... then, at the press conference I believe he indicated he intended to play for a team in France's highest division.... as-in, it wasn't yet known that that would be the case, but it was  his intention.

Right. But too, if you recall, we traded the #54 pick because Wilcox anticipated we would have trouble allotting a roster slot to him.... things have changed drastically, of course. I could easily imagine a situation where we trade Korver or trade Hardaway, and reconsider Cordinier's status, couldn't you?

I'll give you this--it doesn't sound like they think he's ready for prime time. Based on the premise that another team did think he was ready, though, suggests it's a borderline call, and that with our sudden turbulence, there's reason to think Wilcox could reconsider.
