Bulls' Nikola Mirotic out with two broken bones in face after being punched by teammate Bobby Portis

The young, hungry and competitive nature the Bulls sought after choosing to rebuild crossed a line Tuesday when Bobby Portis punched Nikola Mirotic in the face during a practice altercation.

Mirotic, who had won the starting power forward position in advance of Thursday's season opener in Toronto, suffered a concussion and what the team called "maxillary fractures." The Bulls added "surgery is likely required."

A source who spoke to Mirotic after he was released from the hospital said the forward suffered two fractures and placed an early estimate for his absence at "a few weeks, at least." He possibly will have to wear a mask upon that return.

In their statement, the Bulls said they are "evaluating disciplinary action." But a source said the team is merely following protocol for all such incidents by communicating with the league office and that Portis will be suspended for multiple games.

According to several witnesses, tensions heightened between Portis and Mirotic during a competitive scrimmage. Several words were exchanged over trips up and down the court. Some shoving escalated matters and Mirotic once moved in Portis' direction. And then Portis landed the lone punch, which placed Mirotic on the ground for several minutes before his hospital trip.

Good luck with all that, Coach Fred!

That Portis cat is the guy several of us had pegged for our draft a little ways back. Saw him several times in college games. Certainly didn't see the Kermit Washington tendency in any SEC game of his. He scored and blocked shots at will on Georgia except for one game that I remember. Think that one game probably was his only single digit scoring game his sophomore year. Will be missing at least a couple of games for this incident am pretty sure.

So when is the last time a player put another teammate in the hospital on purpose in the NBA? Guessing the punishment was based on a percentage number. Ten percent of the season. Drama is definitely a part of the NBA but this was really surprising even in lieu of the rumors of it building up over multiple seasons. Coaches should have addressed that stuff if that was the case. Yeah I know, hindsight is 20/20.
