Back then it was called a "Hi Fi" (for high fidelity record player).
It was a turntable inside a large cabinet with a cloth front for the speaker to be heard.  Also had a radio included (though most stations were AM back then).

Yes we had the same one. An elderly couple lived below our apartment 35 years ago and gave us theirs. We eventually got rid of it, despite being old for its time, lotta great memories.

As a kid growing up in Appalachia, someone having that made them qualify, in my kid eyes, as "rich." If they also had a swimming pool, that put them in the "really really rich" category. 🙂
