Can we keep him ???

We had a center. A former all-star center. A shot

blocker that had no match around here.

Then, we end up with Przybilla.

Theo Ratliff cost big $$$$$$$ !

Cost of keeping Przybilla ??????

I don't know, but tonight's stats makes one wonder,

did we loose THAT much when we changed centers.

2 Blocked shots -- 2/4 shots for 4 points -- 14 rebounds !!

Am I dreaming, or is this not pretty decent? And, he has

decent size.

I believe keeping Prz will be considerably cheaper than

Theo would have been. With the difference saved, we

have money for free agents or to pay the drafted rookies.

Right now, he looks like one of the keepers on this team.

Hears another thing. In tonight's win, Hawks hit their

free throws. That made a big diference. and finally,

the Hawks had --- hold your breath for this one ---

ONLY NINE TURNOVERS FOR THE ENTIR GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Scrubs !!!!!!

Joel Pryzbilla will probably evolve into a Center like Greg Ostertag. Ostertag is not real athletic like Pryz but he plays hard and is a decent shotblocker. Przbilla's offense still needs work though.

if they could get the guy to a point that he could consistantly chip in 8-10ppg, he would be all we need in the middle. He's an excellent rebounder and is big enough to fill to help clog the lane.

I think they could get him on the cheap. The trick is to sign him ASAP before other big man hungry teams start throwing money at him.

I said it once, and I'll reiterate it now:

It isn't always players or desire, but how they fit together.

Superstars don't make teams. Boston, Orlando, Phili ... the superstar is leading them no where.

What a TEAM needs is a TEAM. Roleplayers.

I said that from day one when people bashed Reef, bashed Terry, bashed Dog, bashed Jackson ... (and I'm guilty of it too) ... a team needs roleplayers.

Well, you finally have the roleplayers. Now you need talent.

The great thing is that this team works well together. They are unstructured and prefer a "street ball" type of game. Which is fine... they are all on the same page.

Play.

Superstar don't make teams but they sure do make champions. Name the last team to win a championship that didn't have either the best player in the league or the second best player in the league on it.

I'm waiting....

2003 Spurs - Duncan (2nd best player)

2002-2000 Lakers - Shaq (best player)

1999 Spurs - Duncan (2nd best player)

1998-1996 Bulls - Jordan (best player)

1995-1994 Rockets - Hakeem (best player) (no Jordan in league)

1993-1991 Bulls - Jordan (best player)

1990-89 Pistons - Thomas (best example of a "team" over a superstar even though Thomas is a top 10 PG of all time)

1988-84 Lakers or Celtics - Magic or Bird (best or 2nd best player)

1983 Sixer - MVP Moses Malone

1982 Lakers - Magic

1981 Celtics - Bird

1980 Lakers - Magic

1979 Sonics - A TEAM WITHOUT A TRUE SUPERSTAR!!

Only have to go back to the 1970s to find a team without a true superstar and only have to go back to the 1980s (1989-90 season) to find a team without the best or second best player.

....."A great TEAM player is more valuable than a great player."

It's true.

One thing that gets overlooked about Przybilla is that he doesn't slow the pace of the game down for the Hawks. He's not the big, lumbering, oafish seven footer that guys like Greg Ostertag and Eric Montross are. Przybilla is actually fairly athletic. The thing about him though is this. He's very good at starting the fast break with a good pass after getting a defensive rebound.

What great TEAM player has won a championship without a great player?

Shaq and Kobe sure aren't great TEAM player but they are great players. They won several rings. Are you thinking that Derek Fisher, Robert Horry is someone else was the most valuable player on the team?

I agree your great player needs to be able to play within a team structure but great players often do not sublimate their own games for their team like Jordan didn't. Pippen was the great TEAM player from the Bulls but Jordan was the man who was more valuable, IMO.

Perhaps I don't understand what you mean by a great TEAM player as opposed to a great player, though.

BTW - Wooden's famous axiom is 100% right for college basketball where Wooden coached. Neither Duncan nor Shaq got near a championship because they didn't have great teams in college. With the lower level of talent in the NCAAs, you have more room to make a big run without a superstar than in the NBA. That said, every NCAA champion since the 1970s except the recent Maryland Terrapins had a McDonalds All-American on their roster.

Any building, courthouse or outhouse, must have a foundation.

A ball team must have a solid foundation. Super stars

are wonderful. Let's get twelve!!

Can't do that. I know. Then, how about we build a solid

foundation for a great team? We can't have everything.

This off season, let's build a solid foundation for

our Hawks.

If we can do that, perhaps next season, when all the

free agents hit the market, we might be able to snag

one or even two of them to go with our solid foundation.

I believe we have multiple draft picks this off season.

If we do well there, and we all hope that we do, we

still need those solid players to make a complete roster.

I believe our current starting center is one of those

solid, not really expensive, building blocks that we

need to construct what we want. We can't have it all

at once, much as we would like to.

Keeping some of what we have, a solid draft and a free

agent or two could set us up as a young, athletic,

long and lean fighting machine for the future.

That's what I hope and expect for the next season.

Then, we get that super star everyone covets and we

are in business.

{Loved the win over Shaq and his merry men!!}

Go Hawk Scrubs !!!

1990-89 Best Player ..... Jordan

1988-84 Best player ..... Kareem as well

1983..................... Some would still say Kareem

1982..................... Kareem

1981...................... Kareem

1980...................... Kareem

But your point is valid.
