  1. Hmm I'd like to hear how Joe is gonna recruit guys when we are capped out. Maybe he could forgo or defer a few of those Brinks trucks coming his way. :snowballfight:
  2. Nobody has posted in here yet? I thought the fail train thread was a classic.
  3. I am pessimistic on the chances of this happening. Even if it did, I wouldn't be ecstatic. It would be a good signing, but to be honest Shaq could go out there and have absolutely nothing left next year and I wouldn't be a bit surprised. He is very close to a TV job I'd say.
  4. I knew you were in the clouds orchestrating a grand experiment on this one, MrH. It's obviously asking a lot for people to consider the question in a hypothetical vacuum in light of recent events (inclusive of your posting record of late re: JJ).
  5. By deploying the same strategy the last time we went into the tank for a decade: flawless drafting, deft and patient development of talent while adding key, proven veteran pieces through free agency where appropriate. And reducing carbon emissions. Wait...
  6. The Hawks don't use the MLE or carry a full roster for that matter. I have defended the Spirit in the past because in my mind they have spent the money on the Hawks when it was time to, regardless of the off-court schenanigans. They have been an absolute abomination with the Thrashers, but I don't care too much about the Thrashers so I can let that pass but I bear it mind. The selling of the pick is a horrible PR move. It sends the message to me that we are not serious about this and all the criticisms about the ownership group are suddenly justified. Things could get ugly...again. (sigh)
  7. what?? You are basing your opinion of the NBA's exposure and market in Greece from the NBA knowledge of your Filipino brother-in-law? Did someone hack your account? (Doesn't sound like a Sturt post.) Greece is a basketball country and there are plenty of Greeks who follow the NBA. Why do you think Olympiakos was willing to overspend to get (relatively) little-known Josh Childress?
  8. ...and then there's HawkWeiserr.
  9. Also, his free throw shooting is Ben Wallacesque. I would not be too thrilled with this pick.
  10. Incredible match and you've got to salute the team -- they left it all out there even though they had two legit goals disallowed that nearly cost them two wins. Even if they couldn't put a goal across you could not fault them for effort. They are not the most technically skilled or athletic team but they have true grit and heart and hustle. That is something we can get behind. They dominated the match and totally deserved to win that one. In my mind that's the greatest moment in US soccer history. There is some justice left in the world. Ended up winning the group and it would appear the Ghana draw is a good one (you would think much better than running into Germany in the first round).
  11. I wrote on his blog under a different hanlde. Dude is off the deep end -- no excuse especially considering MC just blogged on this. He looks worse with every post. Unreal. Also sad that there are prolific posters on the Board who still don't have a clue despite the literally 100's of threads on the issue. Bradley is a paid journalist (loose usage of the term) and he is spreading ignorance like wildfire.
  12. I'm not a big fan of KGs fake intensity but honestly do you really expect him to take a swing and get suspended for the rest of the series there?
  13. Yep - we've been eye to eye on this since I joined. Mike Brown owes his Coach of the Year award to LBJ. While both Woody and Brown should be credited for their steady guidance and regular season successes, they both seem to have the same shortcomings regarding offensive tactics (or lack thereof) and game management. (Although, as far as I am aware, Brown is not on record as not giving a ____ about offense.) Further to your playoff offense thread, it would appear that an iso-based offense is not a viable strategy against the type of defensive effort you see in the playoffs, particularly as opposing coaches will have extended time between games for scheming on how to defend it. The reality is -- and it is a harsh reality given both Woody's and Brown's regular season successes, particularly on the offensive side of the ball -- fans want to see playoff wins. I think that Brown and Woody's Iso-style lends itself to greater criticism when it doesn't work. When you see guys standing around while Lebron or JJ tries to crack a set defense by going one-on-one (or four), it's really a striking difference for fans as they watch opposing teams work the ball around for good shots. It really makes Brown and Woody lightning rods for criticism, right or wrong, because it's so unconventional and contravenes most viewers' concept of "good" basketball. I think if they deployed a more conventional style of attack they wouldn't be subject to such widespread criticism even if the results were similar in terms of wins/losses.
  14. I've been saying that Brown and Woodson are the same coach for the longest, and I don't particularly care for either one of them (as coaches). Brown is much more annoying due to his ridiculously wide mouth movements. Dude's mouth looks like an alligator's when he's speaking.
  15. EDIT: Sorry Mods didn't see the other thread. Click the man's link -- he definitely deserves the hits. While breaking down the Hawks’ options concerning J.J. and free agency, I mentioned in passing that the Hawks could gain a trade exception and perhaps a draft pick in a sign-and-trade with a team under the salary cap. Aaron, a moderator at Hawksquawk.net, emailed to say he thinks the exception (acquired in what’s known as a “non-simultaneous trade”) could be more beneficial than initially meets the eye: “The traded player exception (TPE) the Hawks would get by trading him to a team under the cap would be extremely useful in future trades. It’s very possible that the Hawks could move Joe to somewhere like Chicago for a TPE and then turn around and use the TPE to acquire a replacement wing. Just off the top of my head, someone like Corey Maggette would definitely fit the mold of an available scoring wing. (Not sure how he’d feel about Crawford, but it’s just a thought). Joe wouldn’t mind because it wouldn’t affect his bottom line in a negative way, and the team receiving him would definitely be interested because it lowers his initial salary, thereby increasing the salary space they have to pursue complimentary players.” (What he means by the lower initial salary is that because of the larger future raises available to a Bird Rules free agent, J.J.’s first-year salary would be lower in a sign-and-trade than in a straightforward signing.) Good point by Aaron, and one that’s actually illustrated by the example I used in the post: Seattle’s sign-and-trade of Rashard Lewis to Orlando in 2008 for a $9 million trade exception and a second-round pick. In a non-simultaneous, a team can acquire up to 100 percent of the salary sent out plus $100,00 with any difference built up as a sort of credit known as a trade exception. Since draft picks have $0 value in trades until the player signs a rookie contract, the Hawks could get a pick and also get the full value of J.J.’s new contract as an exception and acquire a player(s) in a future trade (the limit is a year) without the requirement of matching salaries. Typically, teams willing to trade a player without receiving a player in return tend to be teams looking to trim payroll and/or get out from under a contract (Maggette, to use Aaron’s example, has 3 years and $30.8 million left on his deal). And that’s pretty much what happened to the Sonics: they used the $9 million exception to acquire Kurt Thomas from the Suns, who were looking to shed payroll and gained an $8 million trade exception. But the Sonics also got two first-round draft picks in that deal and later dealt Thomas to the Spurs for another first-round pick and a couple of expiring contracts. (That sequence of deals is one of the many examples of why Michael Gearon Jr.’s disdain for “bad contracts” can be a tad overstated: in the NBA, there’s almost always a way to move players for something of value even if it requires some short-term pain.) So Aaron is right that a trade exception could be no small thing. The Hawks likely wouldn’t be able to get a comparable player to J.J., or might have to take on an burdensome contract do so, but it would provide more possibilities than simply using the mid-level, bi-annual and minimum-salary exceptions to plug the hole. – The latest on the Hawks coaching search: Dwane Casey is set for another interview, Avery Johnson’s desire for personnel power has been overstated, Larry Drew is being considered and Mark Jackson appears to be a long shot. Rick Sund apparently hasn’t even narrowed down his initial list of candidates to a leading group.
  16. BUT BRAD-DOG AND SCHULTZIE SAID WE COULD SIGN D-WADE!!!!! Get that stinker JJ out of town and get a real max player in his spot! Use that money to on a real (!) MAX player not Joe Blow! Then sign and trade Marvin, Bibby and our first for Lebron, bring back chillz and sign Bosh! Trade Smoove for Howard: 1) Teague 2) Wade 3) Lebron 4) Bosh 5) Howard With Horford and Craw off the bench. Then trade Mo Evans and a bucket of basketballs for Delonte West and Lebron's mom for team chemistry. Sign Avery Johnson as coach and tell me that team right thar won't win a championship. [/sarcasm] Wait, these aren't the AJC blogs so forget what I said. Thank you MC -- thank you, thank you, thank you. Could we get JS or MB to take a quick look at this since someone else has done their work for them?
  17. Am I the only one to notice mrh has gotten a bit testy since the Hawks got b-smacked out of the playoffs? Not his usual amiable self...
  18. We can only go over the cap to retain our own players -- therefore it would take a S-n-T deal to get any star in here (unlikely). It's not your friend's fault he was misinformed -- he probably read the AJC -- which should be a reliable source for accurate Hawks coverage, but isn't.
  19. Another Diesel classic. Nobody does it like him.
  20. and it was a friggin' coup to turn him into Bibby. The Shelden Guarantee was BK's biggest sin in my opinion.
  21. I don't think Ursher has the type of capital reserves it takes to purchase an NBA franchise outright. He ain't got it like that.
  22. I'll say this for the man -- he was an upgrade to Terry Stotts.
