Why are the Nuggets ignoring the Knicks?

The machinations of the nearly inevitable Carmelo Anthony trade are shading into the ridiculous, with Denver allegedly threatening the Nets, the talks going “underground” and reports Wednesday morning that Amar’e Stoudemire sent Anthony a text message assuring Melo that Stoudemire would welcome him to New York. Things reached their low point when Anthony was forced to address whether his wife, LaLa Vasquez, had any influence over his preferred playing location.

Don’t ignore that bit about the Knicks, long known to be Anthony’s destination of choice. Alan Hahn of Newsday reported Wednesday that the Knicks “quietly are trying to put pieces in place to be ready to start meaningful negotiations for Anthony.” Those pieces, Hahn said, could include a first-round pick the Knicks acquire elsewhere, Danilo Gallinari and/or Wilson Chandler. Previous reports of a possible New York package have also included Landry Fields.

Every Anthony report says the same thing about this: The Nuggets aren’t interested in what the Knicks have to offer, and they prefer the Nets’ combination of Derrick Favors (a prized rookie big man), Devin Harris and two first-round draft picks.

Here’s a question that hasn’t been asked loudly enough, especially in the wake of more reports (via ESPN’s Chris Broussard) that Anthony still hasn’t agreed to sign an extension in New Jersey: Why is Denver so convinced the Nets’ package is better?...........

Frankly, I don't pay attention enough to know exactly how the Knicks have been able to do as well as they're doing this season, so I'm appealing to the die-hard NBAers around here to give me some insight...

Sounds like the Knicks would have to cobble together a package of other teams' players and expirings and draft picks to tempt the Nugs... not looking for "trade ideas" here, but just an overall evaluation of if you think we could be some part of a package that would appeal to DEN and would get us something of value in return...?

To answer the question raised by the article of why the Nuggets are ignoring the Knicks:

Draft picks are great and all, but the Nuggets’ front office has seen Chandler, Fields and (to a lesser extent) Gallinari play this year, right? Is a package including two of those guys plus one first-rounder really worse than a package of Favors, Harris and two first-rounders?

Draft picks are unknowns. The Nets’ 2011 first-rounder will almost certainly be a lottery pick, though it’s possible New Jersey could finish above a half-dozen teams depending on what happens with Anthony and the cast slated to come to Jersey with him. Who knows where New Jersey’s 2012 pick ends up.

Ummm...hell yes. Favors + Harris + Net's 2011 Lottery Pick + Another First Round Pick >> 2 of Gallinari/Fields/Chandler

Also, Denver is convinced the Knicks tampered with Anthony which is the reason they are having to unload their franchise player.

Now why in the world would Denver look to take a worse deal from NY to reward them for tampering with their player and hurting their franchise?

Personally, I'd take the deal with the promising big man, the excellent PG, more cap relief, and better draft picks over getting a couple of swingmen putting up inflated numbers in the Knicks' system.

The actual point of the thread being... pragmatically... do we have anything the Nuggets would want that the Knicks could get from us?

I would certainly see if they are excited about Marvin but beyond him we don't have much other than filler and Jamal Crawford.

Why would the Nets give up so much for a guy who most likely will bolt at seasons end?

they r really really REALLY desperate lol they are 1 of the worst teams in the league. Only the kings and cleveland have worst records. If they dont get melo no other big time free agents would want to sign there.

They won't make the deal if Melo doesn't agree to sign the extension there.

And no, we shouldn't help the only team in the conference that can steal the #5 seed from us. No thank you.

They wouldn't do the deal on those terms unless Carmelo agrees to sign an extension with them. Any team trading for Carmelo right now is doing it on the assumption that he agrees to sign with them.
