John Carter

Loved this movie, one of my favorites in the last few years. Probably the least effective advertising campaign I can remember for a movie though. I had no previous knowledge of the story and had no real interest in seeing the movie, but the story was pretty darned good, as was the acting and FX. If the marketing had focused a little more on the actual story, I think it would have done better in its opening weekend. I'd definitely recommend seeing it though. As I understand it, they changed the name at the last minute from John Carter of Mars to just John Carter, which only increases the weight of my complaint.

It looked like it might be an interesting movie, although I was really annoyed with the whole "You're John Carter of Earth" line from the previews, which made me feel like we're kind of full of ourselves as if there would be a situation where a human from Earth would be such a fascinating thing. That may have made total sense where it fits in the movie but it felt a bit arrogant to me in the trailer. It did surprise me how bad it bombed at the box office and I definitely plan on seeing it, probably this coming weekend.

I don't even recall that from the movie, but in the context of the story he is a fairly fascinating thing to them as he can do things they can't. The commercials give it no context and really only make the movie look like Conan the Barbarian in space, which is disappointing. I loved the story and would love to see more of it on the screen. It's getting decent word of mouth so maybe it will keep showing strong. I'd definitely recommend seeing it though.

It was a scene in the trailer where Lynn Collins says that to him and he says something like "Yes Ma'am". I appreciate your recommendation and will make sure I see it while it's still showing on the IMAX.

I'm not one of these guys that says you have to like foreign films and all of that, but this stuff is terrible. Poorly written and badly acted effects porn films is why we get so few well written movies per year.

I don't know whether "John Carter" fits this mold or not, but everything by Michael Bay does. The reaction you have to this movie is the same one I get everytime I see Bay is coming out with another blockbuster. I just sit there and go "how do people keep greenlighting movies with him at the helm?" and then I think, "well, I guess people keep buying tickets so the American audience has no one to blame but itself for the poor quality of those movies."I do know my father enjoyed the John Carter series of pulp fiction when he was younger and is hoping this will be decent (and he is definitely not a big "special effects movie" kind of person).

Michael Bay is awful but his movies make a ton of money so as long as that continues to happen he'll continue to make them. I read recently that he's already working on a script for Transformers 4 to come out in 2014 and not a single original cast member (human) will return. Not that the cast was anything special but it says a lot when these guys don't want to work on a 100 million dollar movie.

Analysts have known since John Carter's $30 million domestic opening weekend that the movie, with a production budget of $275 million and another $100 million spent on marketing, would cause a large write-down for Disney, though most estimates were about $150 million, with at least one as high as $165 million.

As a result of the hefty $200 million charge, during the period ending March 31 -- Disney's second fiscal quarter -- the studio segment will post a loss of $80 million-$120 million, the company said. During the same quarter a year ago, Disney reported operating profit of $77 million.

John Carter makes it four consecutive years that Disney has had to take a large write-down because of a poor performing movie, following Mars Needs Moms, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

I saw prince of Persia. It's ok if you got netflix and 2 hrs to burn. I wouldn't pay to see that movie. The rest of those movies were BOMBS which didn't seem entertaining in their trailers. Disney should have probably taken their time with John Carter ala James Camerons Avatar. From the previews, it looked like it had enough to be a scifi hit.

I enjoyed Prince of Persia as well, although it's certainly no classic and I'd probably never watch it a 2nd time. Still haven't had a chance to see John Carter yet but hopefully I will before it's out of theaters. I can't speak on those other movies as I haven't seen them but it sure does seem that Disney pays a lot of money to have movies made that could probably have been done for a lot less.

They should be embarrassed by that list. And yes, this movie is making money overseas. But I'm glad it's a flop here at the very least. Granted it's getting close already, but I'd rather see hollywood/film die rather than throwing out crap like the movies in the bold text. Edited by Hotlanta1981

Why would you be glad that a movie flops? Do you realize how many average income people depend on big budget movies like this to support their families?

http://news.yahoo.com/pink-slime-choice-schools-230530972--abc-news.htmlThe people that feed us that crap also have families to feed. That doesn't change that they're still giving us crap.
