(Side story that I've probably shared here before, so my apologies if it's a repeat, I just couldn't resist...)

 

After helping to wrap up a long all-day conference at a nearby downtown office, I went to rejoin a working colleague of mine, a usually sweet-hearted suburban grandma-type of The Caucasian Persuasion who neighbored my cubicle, so we could high-tail it out of there and head back to our office nearby. Or at least pretend to, as the workday was about over.

 

 

As I approached, she was chatting with a few attendees, also Caucasian but much closer to my age, apparently about some random local issues. I could tell she was bringing up a sore subject, because she literally clutches the pearls around her neck whenever she does.

 

 

"Oh, don't even get me started! He makes my blood boil every time he opens his mouth!" I walk right into the conversation as she turns to me and puts her hand on my shoulder for confirmation:

 

"Lethal, sweetie... have you, in your ENTIRE LIFE, EVER known ANYONE more RACIST than ANDREW YOUNG???"

 

 

If the Census was in front of me at that moment, I'd have checked off the African-Awkwardly-Astounded-American box. The others in the group turned away from my elderly co-worker to look at me like, "Well, Mr. Weapon... HAVE you??" 

 

I was exhausted and in no mood to go all Chuck D  on my dear co-worker in front of strangers. I had been building up that Good Negro vibe working alongside her for years and, goshdarnit, I wasn't trying to cash all that in now.

 

After way too much dead silence on my part, all I could muster in response to her question was: "Ehhhhh... I can proooooooobably think up a fewwwwwwww..."  

 

Reading the varied contortions on my face, and hopefully picking up on my sarcastic tone, one of my contemporaries in the group hastily changed the subject to, like, the circus or something, a perfect opportunity for me to go, "Oh, will you look at the time!" and exit stage left with my colleague, bless her ignorant heart, in tow.

 

We talked shop all the way back to the office, and I never spoke of it again. But the copy of A Way Out of No Way she received from her Secret Santa was NO coincidence.

Charles Barkley just joined the telecast for the UGA - Kentucky game and said he's there with Danny Ferry, a good friend, has done a great job with the Hawks, and thinks they should definitely give him his job back.

I don't know if this has been brought up or not, but Bud's contract runs out next year. He's likely due a massive extension once the new owners are in place. Can or would he say he won't resign without Ferry?

That would be a damned foolish thing for Bud to do.  I think some of you are a little nuts on how close Danny and Bud are.  And the players he has claimed to have a special relationship with and are supposed to trust him?  How should they view such a move?

It's called bargaining.  The players seem to also want Ferry back so they will probably support Bud in standing up for the man who brought them all together.

Well there's that and there's also concern of what pieces (of shit) from the A$G will be hanging around with this new ownership regime. I can guarantee you that people do not want to work for someone who secretly records your conversations and uses that to blackmail his partners.

I think it is a bit premature to be worried about whether Bud will stick around since we do not know the ownership composition. But it's also foolish to suggest that Bud and Danny are not close. There are mounds of evidence to suggest they are close and you're in your own world if you think that.

He's just using the patented strategy of Ferry detractors, presenting lies in a fruitless attempt to make that side seem even somewhat reasonable.

It's not foolish, Bud knows what stable management and ownership looks like from his 17 years in San Antonio. If he's not sure he can get that here in Atlanta why stick around to have infighting and secrets tape etc.
