TheNorthCydeRises
I heard Jalen Rose talk about this today on his Jalen & Jacoby show. He's mentioned it before. People believe that the East is so weak, that the playoffs need to be changed in order to properly represent the true top 16 teams in the playoffs. This year though, it's the West who will have a team that doesn't even win 36 games get into the playoffs. So what would a 1 - 16 seeded NBA playoff look like, if we just did away with the conference playoffs? Would this be a better set up? Current 1st round matchups: ( 2/9 ) 16 ) Charlotte @ 1) Golden St 9) Washington @ 8) Memphis 13) Indiana @ 4) Houston 12) Oklahoma City @ 5) Utah 14) Chicago @ 3) Cleveland 11) Atlanta @ 6) Boston 10) Toronto @ 7) LA Clippers 15) Detroit @ 2) San Antonio 3 games separate the 5th seed - 11th seed
Moderators lethalweapon3 Posted February 9, 2017 Moderators Report Share Posted February 9, 2017 The WNBA went conference-free last season and the reviews went well. WNBA Caveats were (a) there are only 8 teams in, out of 12, so the early-round seed/bye setup was a little weird, and (b) they only play best-of-5 in the conference finals and Finals, so the travel isn't absurd. Best-of-7s in the NBA may go back to H-H-A-A-A-H-H format in this conference-free format, as media crews (and maybe the players and coaches) will seek to minimize the back-and-forth. The West already does MEM-LAC now, but I doubt they'd want a lot of series where it's LA-to-TOR-to-LA-to-TOR-to-LA for a first-round that goes seven games. ~lw3
Moderators macdaddy Posted February 9, 2017 Moderators Report Share Posted February 9, 2017 They'd have to balance the schedules too.
Guest
I'd rather have it the way it is now...the west would kill us...although a Hawks Grizz matchup would generate "we da south" love...lol
Admin capstone21 Posted February 12, 2017 Admin Report Share Posted February 12, 2017 Schedules don't allow for that and it will balance out eventually where the easy is just as good

Plus, I don't like the idea of changing the rules to accommodate something that could change every year. If the East improves greatly, do you change it back? Nobody thought this was necessary back in the '80's when LAL was basically escorted to the Finals every year since the West was so weak (compared to the East). Why is it such a league-changing "problem" now? People are so reactionary.
Moderators macdaddy Posted February 13, 2017 Moderators Report Share Posted February 13, 2017 Just get rid of the divisions. Play each team in your conference 3 times and each team in the other conference 2 times. 75 game season.

They are not, under any circumstances, reducing the number of reg. season games. You think billionaires are gonna just give back money for no reason?
