We got Jim Jackson in that trade also.  It was Smitty for Rider/Jackson.  

Jackson wasn't half bad for us.  He was no Smitty but when you lose a Legend (Nique) for 1/4 a season of play from a guy who couldn't fill Nique's shoes.. in the year that we were the best team in the East and there was no Jordan to stop us... I think you go beyond being Eddy up there.

Manning actually did make the team better. Nique had at that point become something less than he'd been before the achilles injury, though admittedly, he continued to be able to score. But never having been one to share the ball, Nique was not the same asset he once was. The unfortunate part is not the talent part, but the contractual part... as we all know, Manning didn't re-sign. Had he come back, it would have breathed new life into the roster for years to come.

I compliment you, though, that you make me remember Jackson being part of the Smitty deal, and you're right, that does make it somewhat less of a nauseous memory.
