Which Player will help the Hawks (2023-2024) win games more? .. If we had to keep only one, who are you keeping?

JC can be featured in PNR which would allow for Capela to be moved.

That's an interesting take.   However, somebody may ask about a defensive comparison of the two?

I guess I asked two different questions... but I will say this...  whose game will contribute more to us winning?  Do you think we win by defense or do we win by offense.  Is there a difference.   Does one player hurt us on defense or offense?

As i hear the deals that were thrown at Dallas, my head spins.   We were definitely doing a salary drop with either Hunter, CC or JC.   While it's easier to put CC above JC and DH because of defense and rebounding and PNR specialist... it's not so clear cut with JC and DH.  Moreover, CC is probably going to be the one moving regardless.

Also JC is more skilled than Hunter.  Especially if his shot gets reliable again.

This is a magnificent point from the JC perspective.   A lot of people miss the skill of JC.   I was reading some of the twitterverse fandom and they were crying about us still having JC.   And many of the post were about a lack of a low post game from JC.   I was like... what the hell are they watching?  Given the opportunity to play in the post, JC does well.   He has both a back to the basket game and a face up game.  That's a rarity for a post player because if you have one, you specialize in that.  He normally kill smaller forwards in the post and he doesn't do too bad with Bigger players.

We became so reliant on him shooting from outside that we brought in a PNR specialist and planted him outside.  The gnarly thing about that is that his diversity allowed him to still be productive on the outside.    Most of JC problems is how we play him.  Defensively, he's getting better.

From the fantake... I think a lot of fans are tired of JC because of his contract.  Look, a contract doesn't play on the court.   Players do.  I think we should get to know the players before we evaluate them by their contract.    Everybody would love to have all the players that they need on value deals but honestly, the contracts are the owners and the GM's concerns.  Our concern should be the product on the floor.

My last post about JC's skill while he was a Hawk.   We will regret trading him for BS.   At least Gay already Knows Snyder's system.

I'll take Hunter over JC because I think we can get most of what JC gives from Bey and JJ while we would be left with a big hole if we are just dumping Hunter.  Hunter may not be a stud but he plays an important role that no one else can fill.  It is like asking if you want to keep a skilled WR when you have two young, skilled WRs who could replace most of that production and offer some additional tools or the average impact left tackle when you have no one else to fill that LT role.  You can't not replace Hunter's role on the team if you are letting him go.  With JC, it is less about me thinking we now have a huge hole on the roster and more about me being very disappointed we didn't get more back.  (Because like you I don't trust that we will do anything significant with the TPE).

It's tough to have an unbiased view of JC as he's a great personality, fan favorite, and a media darling (see: two Athletic articles this morning).  But when you look at the facts about his game:

  • He is an elite PnR big man
  • He's an O.K. defender
  • He has an average post game
  • He's an average 3P shooter with a very slow release (doesn't space the floor as much as someone like Bey)
  • He has zero playmaking ability
  • He cannot dribble

The problem with JC is actually utilizing his strengths, and it's really hard to do that with just about any center in the league.  His best seasons were when he was the primary roll guy and we had Dedmon to stretch the floor.  That was not a winning roster, and unless Brook Lopez wanted to join the Hawks, he had no role to play in our starting lineup.  Schlenk knew this and had plans to move him as soon as he got us Capela from the Rockets, but for whatever reason, it took an eternity to get a deal done.

Anyways, I vote Hunter even though I think he's a comparably skilled player because he fits into the roster better.  Quin just needs to coach the love of mid rangers out of him and have him focus more on pure 3&D.  Hunter has plenty of flaws, like JC, but he's more useful from a roster construction stand point.  We also have more options to backfill JC's minutes as @AHF just mentioned.
