Let's Pretend the Lockout Happens...

Let's pretend that the lockout happens and that some new league formed across the country and NBA players decided to bail for that league. This is a fantasy draft based on that premise.

If you want to be part of the draft, just say /in in this thread. After we get enough people, we'll randomize an order and run the draft.

The Rules:

1. This is a snake draft, so draft order goes 1,2,3,4,...30, 30, 29, 28, 27,...3, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3,...

2. You can draft anybody that is currently in the league (or is a free agent). They must have played at least one NBA game prior to today.

3. You get the player as they are and their projected potential/output for their projected career. So if you draft Shaq, you are getting a player often injured, on the downside of his career, with only a year or so left. If you draft Wall, you get a young player who may project to play for 10+ years at a high level.

4. Each team gets 13 players, no restrictions on positions...draft 13 centers if you want

5. Draft as if you are starting a new franchise, so how your team will play over the next 10-15 years, not just year one

6. When it's your turn to draft, you just post (in bold) the player's name and you should do a writeup on why you chose that player. You should then pm the next person in the list.

7. We'll set a time limit that works for all players to keep draft moving without getting too many skips. If you are skipped for not being here for your turn, you can make it up at any time when you return.

After the draft, each person will writeup why their team is the best and then we'll do a public Hawksquawk vote to determine the winner.

we'll cap it at 30 teams max; posters can pair up with each other to be co-owners

if we don't get to 30, we can still run with less teams, but should have at least 10-15

we can also do 12 players and a coach or 13 players and a coach; when you draft the coach is your choice..you can draft in 1st round or last round; we'll assume you get coach with skills/experience they have today and they will sign a 10 year contract for you

It would be really cool if we could have a fantasy draft and then simulate an NBA season using our rosters. That would be way fun, and that way we could have our teams play it out on the court to determine who's best. :)

It's looking like this might be a very long offseason.

In.

I would recommend waiting another week to get people to sign up and then spelling out the procedures for the draft in more detail before you get started.

You need clarity in advance on several issues, including:

* Selecting the draft order (in the order randomly selected, get to pick in the order randomly selected, in the order people signed up, people get to pick their draft spot in the order they signed up, etc.)

* How players will be picked - i.e., how long to make your pick, whether the time starts running from the last pick or from a designated time (i.e., if you have 3 hours to make your pick and the first pick is Monday at 9 am EST does that mean pick 2 has through 3 pm or through 3 hours after pick 1 - in which case pick 5 could be on the clock in 5 minutes or 12 hours), whether you can email the "commish" a contingency list in the event you are going to be in a meeting or something for an extended period of time, etc.

* Whether trades will be allowed during the draft

etc.

Good points, AHF. Something like this has got to be organized and have some rules guiding it to give it structure, otherwise it will fall apart in short order as people forget or lose interest or get busy in their outside lives or whatever. I've seen that through experience with NFL and MLB fantasy drafts like this proposed one.
