Not sure why anyone would go out of their way to go to Stegman.  I guess the rest of the town is pretty great and you are out of the Atlanta area but it is not a great basketball facility.

I'm actually closer to Athens than Atlanta.  Are these events closed?  I'd love to catch an early glimpse of the team...

Me too, but actually the Athens I talk about is still 1100+ miles away...

Atlanta Hawks Training Camp preview: Matt Costello

Quote

Editor’s note: September has finally arrived and that means that Atlanta Hawks basketball is just around the corner. The team will open training camp at the end of the month and will be kicked off by its annual media day event. Peachtree Hoops will be there to help usher in the new season. In the meantime, we are going to be taking a player by player look at the roster heading into training camp. The plan is for one of these to go up per day but we may have to double up some if the team adds more players between now and the opening of camp.)

Up first in our player by player training camp preview is Matt Costello who inked a two-year partially-guaranteed contract with the team earlier this summer. Costello was a four-year player at Michigan State and also went to Las Vegas with the Hawks’ summer league team earlier this summer.

As a senior with the Spartans, Costello appeared in 35 games while averaging 10.7 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field. He measured out at a solid 6-10 at the Portsmouth Invitational tour where he had a solid showing as a rebounder. Per DraftExpress:

Matt Costello was the second best rebounder at the PIT at 11.7 per game, and measured a solid 6'10, 245 pounds with a 7'1.5 wingspan. Costello didn't get quite the same buzz as some of the upperclassmen around him at Michigan State, but will be highly sought after in every league outside of the NBA given his size and ability to make an impact with his mobility and toughness inside.

Costello appeared in six summer league games with Atlanta averaging 5.7 points 5.0 rebounds per game in just over 18 minutes. He struggled with his shooting while in Vegas converting on 35 percent of his field goal attempts.

As you can see in the video, Costello isn’t going to be the kind of player that delivers a ton of highlight plays. However, he is a heady player who can set screens and has a high basketball IQ which is something that has become somewhat of a requirement of Hawks players. Costello is a hard worker and is a big body that will be able to mix up with the rest of Atlanta’s frontcourt during the preseason.

Costello’s contract has only a $50,000 guarantee. It is a similar situation to the one the Hawks had with Terran Petteway last preseason. More and more NBA teams are handing out contracts with small guarantees like this to players like Costello to get them into camp and to perhaps offset some of the low salaries in the D-League. Still a guy like Costello could be an attractive target for some European teams, so it remains to be seen whether or not the D-League is actually an option.

Even without Atlanta’s current roster crunch, Costello would be a longshot at best to make the team’s final roster. Still it is a great opportunity for him to get some experience in an NBA training camp.

Atlanta Hawks Training Camp preview: Mike Muscala

Quote

Mike Muscala didn’t quite take the step forward many were expecting in 2016 and now at least on the surface, it appears he will come to training camp needing to earn a spot on the Atlanta Hawks final roster.

The Hawks currently have 17 players on their roster. Matt Costello is on what is essentially a training camp contract with a reported guarantee of $50,000. Only half of Muscala’s $1 million salary is guaranteed, which on the surface would seem to put him in a bit of jeopardy for when Atlanta pairs the roster down to the league max of 15.

Muscala is 25 and is entering his fourth season with the Hawks. Muscala spent the first half of his first professional season playing in Spain before joining the Hawks late in the 2014 season. He saw sporadic playing time over those first three seasons but appeared in a career-best 60 games in 2016.

At 6-11, Muscala is versatile enough to swing between both the power forward and center positions. Tiago Splitter’s season-ending hip injury last season forced Muscala to play more minutes at center when at this juncture he might be better served as a power forward.

Muscala came into the league with an adequate jump shot but has worked extremely hard to improve the range on his jumper. He knocked down 55 percent of his field goal attempts two seasons ago and went 9 of 22 from three-point range. His field goal percentage fell to 50 percent last season and his three-point percentage dropped to just 31 percent.

While Muscala’s numbers don’t look that impressive, it has never really felt as though he has ever had a real opportunity to carve out his own spot in the rotation. Coming into last season, it looked like Muscala was poised to take minutes at the power forward slot from Mike Scott. However, that never materialized after he suffered a sprained ankle on opening night and Scott bounced back with a solid season of his own.

If you just look at the contracts Muscala looks like the odd man out but I think it may come down to more than that. Muscala is a product of the Hawks’ development program and the coaching staff has shown quite a bit of confidence in him. Kris Humphries replaced Muscala in the rotation over the final month of the regular season in 2016. However, it was Muscala that opened the playoffs in the rotation as the backup center.

Atlanta currently has a number of options in the front court and it should make for an interesting competition during the preseason. Splitter is looking to return to form while Humphries re-signed and will have a full preseason to get fully up to speed with the team’s offensive and defensive systems. Scott is back and in the final year of his contract while Walter Tavares will be beginning his sophomore season in the league.

If Splitter proves himself to be healthy, then he could become an attractive trade option for a team that needs some frontcourt help. The same could be said for a player like Scott that showed significant defensive improvement last season. So a preseason trade probably isn’t out of the question this time around and the roster situation will be one of the driving storylines throughout camp.

Atlanta Hawks Training Camp preview: Jarrett Jack

Quote

The point guard position will look quite different for the Atlanta Hawks this season. The position the last couple of seasons has been one of strength for Atlanta, but they enter the 2016-17 with a talented group but one that has a number of question marks.

Veteran point guard Jarrett Jack is expected to be a stabilizing force in the Hawks backcourt on and off the court. The Hawks agreed to a one-year deal with Jack on July 10 after he was waived by the Brooklyn Nets.

Jack is a valuable locker room player and is well liked around the league and could serve as a valuable mentor for guys like Dennis Schröder and even Malcolm Delaney who will be making the transition from playing in Europe to the NBA. However, there are question marks regarding what Jack brings to the court.

Jack’s 2016 season came to an end after 32 games due to an ACL injury in his right knee. His rehab continues to progress and he has vowed to be ready by training camp, but there is a good chance the Hawks will play it safe with him early and bring him along slowly.

Jack put up good numbers with the Nets before going down with injury averaging 12.8 points and a career-best 7.4 assists. However, those numbers are a bit hollow thanks to a high usage rate and a 39 percent shooting percentage. He knocked down 30 percent of his three-point attempts and turned the ball over nearly three times per game. Jack’s net rating last season was -5.8. In fact he hasn’t posted a positive net rating since the 2013 season. Six of his last seven seasons have resulted in a net rating in the negative.

Jack Shotchart

One thing the Hawks have in their favor is that they won’t need Jack to play heavy minutes even if he ultimately wins the backup job. That should have a positive effect on his efficiency. The biggest concern with Jack at this stage is that his speed and mobility take another hit due to the knee injury. He has never been regarded as even an average defender and struggled to finish at the rim last season before the injury.

If Schröder shows that he is ready and Delaney can fill in as the backup then Jack can slot well into an Elton Brand role with Atlanta. However, if Jack is pressed into a bigger role as a backup then the Hawks may be forced to look for help outside the organization

Atlanta Hawks to work out Richard Solomon later this week, per report

Quote

The Atlanta Hawks may not be finished adding players to their training camp roster. The team is scheduled to work out 6-11 power forward Richard Solomon on Wednesday and Thursday according to Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders.

Solomon was a four-year player at California and averaged 11 points and 10.2 rebounds as a senior in 2014. He went undrafted but landed in training camp with Oklahoma City. He spent the 2015 season playing with the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA D-League where he averaged 8.5 points and 6.9 rebounds in 28 games.

Solomon spent last season playing in Japan and had a busy summer playing in the Orlando summer league with Phoenix and later with Oklahoma City in Las Vegas.

The Hawks currently have 17 players under contract including Matt Costello and Mike Muscala who’s deals for next season are not fully guaranteed.

There is an interesting competition developing in the team’s front court behind starters Dwight Howard and Paul Millsap. The team also has under contract Tiago Splitter who is returning from season-ending hip surgery, Kris Humphries and Walter Tavares who are all capable of playing the center position. Mike Scott enters the final year of his deal at power forward while Muscala is hoping to stick for a fourth season.

The Hawks will hold media day festivities on September 26 with training camp scheduled to begin the 27th at the University of Georgia.

Enough for practice.

Guys get dinged up.

Also if an injury occurs during the season and you need to sign someone at least the coaching staff will know how and if they fit.
