benhillboy
It’s pretty simple. Guys off the Bud Tree are looking for players who impact the score (duh). Here’s the Grizz on/off despite a rash of injuries/ rehab: Here’s the Bucks’, again significant lineup shuffling due to injury: You think Portis’ minutes won’t come down in lieu of Crowder? Of course they will, already have. Now I give you Quinn’s Jazz from last season: Need more? Here’s the Hawks’ 60 win season: See why Kent had an extremely short leash? It’s pretty seldom a super high on court player on a great team also has a + off court metric (meaning the team played worse with him off) but Kyle did, JJJ and Jrue are. That’s impact that no one on the ‘22-‘23 Hawks could dream of. Finally, here’s the ‘22-‘23 Hawks: See the difference? So many “0s” and “1s” in front of the decimal I feel like I’m looking at a 80’s IBM PC boot up. None of those teams I used as an example are overly-talented, Big 3, stacked teams. The best players on those teams have significant warts. They just have a lot of players who understand the fundamentals of moving themselves and the ball to maximize shots and stopping the ball on defense. These totally negligible on/off values for the Hawks are around the career average for all these guys except Clint who has clearly reached a crossroads in terms of his defensive value. As far as Trae, John, and Dre, bad fit and coaching plays a part but they certainly own the majority of it, all players on non-tanking teams do. OO and Aaron Holiday the only ones with a respectable career on and on/off net because they’re actually useful in their bench roles (and stick to them!) The kids (JJ and AJ) are surely on the right track and obviously Bey will have positive impact when not on a team tanking for the 1st pick every year. Theres gonna be some serious roster turnover this summer, trust me. Quinn simply isn’t gonna go into next season with a roster full of guys who don’t wield a significant positive effect on the score. The amazing consistent mediocrity of this team was crystal clear to see in these simple metrics as soon as the roster was set. benhillboy
Kevin salary dumped on a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since the late 90’s and he at +2.9 on court. Delon on a shit team at +2.2 and +3.8. It Gallo was healthy he’d be around +3 or 4 with the Celts. I’ve been SMH at those moves so much my head about screw itself off it’s neck base.
