Question of the Day 11/17....

You have been given one specific wish from a Basketball god.   He can make one player from a previous Atlanta Hawks team come back to your 2023-2024 Atlanta Hawks.   The only caveat is that he will effectively replace the position that he plays.

For example... You can get Prime Jeff Teague (Put em on Skates) but he will replace Trae Young.

What Hawk are you picking?

Nique at SF.

Imagine Trae with Nique... But would Nique dominate this version of the NBA?

I had several thoughts.

Deke... may be my top choice.

But... Millsap is a contender as well.  I know we love JJ..  But prime Sap was a do it all kind of Guy.

I'd also have to consider Josh Smith.  What would Trae do with Josh?

Supes is somewhere screaming about Al Horford.

What about Kyle Korver to replace Hunter. 💯 Can you imagine having a money LEGIT 3 point specialists coming off screens to Trae’s precise passes? Korver would average like 5 3’s made a night!

Hunter has a gorgeous shot if you got 5 minutes to spare 🤦‍♀️

Seriously it get blocked a bit cuz the wind up takes forever.

Ive noticed throughout NBA history the legal shoots just get it and fire 🔥 quickly..

Ray Allen

lil crap scurry

KORVER..

Horford would be a good pick.  Great defense, smart player, can pass the ball, and helps spread the floor.  I love that choice.

Nique is an easy one both because of his talent and the desire to see him get his due.

Those would be my top 2 options.

I think Korver only played the 2.

Korver at SG

ps I love DJ it would just be a different look.

I'm not mad at what we have in DJ right now.   Right now he's shooting 38.7% from Three and 22 ppg and 5.6 apg.

Korver's best year as a Hawk, he was 49.2% from three and 12.1 ppg, and 2.6 apg.

I think I'm good with holding on to DJ even though 49.2% from three is A freakin Mazing.   His other outputs aren't as good.

According to 82 games, he was splitting his time between the 2 and the 3.  For the 2014-15 season, they have him playing ~56% of his minutes at SG and ~44% of his minutes at SF.

Nique is obvious.  Other options:

Maybe we bring in Joe Johnson to play SF?

Would prime Horford actually be a better fit for modern NBA center than Mutumbo?

Did Joe SF?  IF he did... no brainer.. I would consider taking Joe over Nique.

If I was swapping DJ, it would be for JJ.  I think in non-iso mode his %s would go way up and he can matchup much better against big guards.  But SG is a strength for us this season and his role as a backup PG is also really important given the shallow depth behind Trae.  If I can do this, I'm looking to upgrade SF or C based on what we've seen so far this year.

Well, shoot.. that changes things...

We have a pretty delima...

  • Joe Johnson @ 3
  • Kyle Korver @ 3
  • Dominique Wilkins @ 3
  • Josh Smith @3

I don't think he did much, but he certainly had the size to do it.  We had the Joshes and others at SF.  FWIW, 82games has him playing 76% of his minutes at SG and 24% at SF.

Joe is the only person who would be in a conversation versus Nique but I don't think I could deny my excitement at seeing a Trae, DJ, Nique, JJ, CC/OO lineup if I am making a swap at SF.  I was always a big Josh fan but he was ultimately selfish and self-destructive with his shot selection (and putting him at SF would exacerbate the problem of him taking too many perimeter shots) so he is a non-starter for me versus JJ or Nique.  Korver's elite shooting would be an obvious great fit with Quin but he just isn't scalable or overall impactful enough for me to pass on JJ or Nique.

With JJ, I think about him in Phoenix when he didn't have the playmaking responsibilities and didn't have to iso to score and he shot 48% from 3pt range his last season there.  That would be really exciting here and I think he would be a good defensive replacement at the position.  So I can definitely see a case to be made here.  Worthy of discussion in a way I just don't see with Josh or Korver.

I think Deke is the kind of Center you would need going forward.

If I'm not mistaken, a Zone was considered an illegal defense in Deke's day.   It was allowed starting in 2001.  Just imagine, we can plant Deke close to the paint and let him patrol.   If Embiid, Jokic, or Victor is shooting from outside... so be it... let them shoot over JJ.   It's a lower percentage shot.  But everything inside is being funnelled to Mr. No, No, No!!

Deke would be a monster in the modern NBA.

I was thinking of the time we had Crawford.

I want to say we slid Joe over to Sf.

Deke is a really interesting case.  His offensive limitations would worse today than when he played here and his mobility would be a problem when he had to mark a perimeter oriented big, but you are right that he never got to play with legal zones in Atlanta.  (And coaches were ill equipped to really capitalize on zone strategies when he did play under the new rules.  Plus he was in his late 30's by that time.)

I like Horford better because I think he would fit Quin's systems like a glove on both ends.

The thing I don't like about Horford is his lack of Size.  He was no answer for Jokic in the finals.  He has never been an answer for Embiid.  The only person he ever answered was a Game or 2 vs. Giannis.   Offensively, he would be great but defensively, we'd be in the same spot we have with OO.. Except, he has more experience than OO.
