From Draft night...

Quote:

We're very pleased and excited to have Josh Childress,” said Hawks General Manager Billy Knight.
“We think he’ll be a good part of our foundation, a good part of our future.
He adds to the athleticism of our team, the energy of our team, the perimeter shooting and the ball-handling of our team. He’ll help us on and off the court.”

I missed the part where Knight says, we believe he's ready to step right in and make us contenders. You know, he was talking too much about the future for me to see that part?

In baseball, even the great ones, have hitting slumps.

In basketball, the players hit slumps, too. Their shots

just refuse to go down.

When this happens to a veteran player, they just keep on

shooting or hitting until they snap out of it.

For the rookie, a slump to begin their career can be

horrible, I'm sure. The more they press, the less likely

they are to hit that hot streak where everything falls.

The ball is the same size as before. The goal is the

same size and the same height. This young man was able

to score before. The ability hasn't left him.

So much pressure to become the "Instant success" that

we want him to have. Yet, remember, this is all new.

s

Sure, he's played a lot, but not N.B.A. ball. Yes, he's

older and more experienced than some rookies but he's

still a rookie.

Another thing to remember, this is a completely new team

with only two returning players and the entire coaching

staff trying to fit everything together. Not only that,

they had all these extra players to work with to see if

they could find a keeper or two.

Now, we are finally down to the final roster and we expect

the coaches to have more time to work with each individual

player and improve their game and put a team together.

The grass somehow always looks better across the fence.

Hawks will certainly have growing pains. Let's not be

too hard on any of our players until they have had some

time to settle down into this team.

Some players will do better than expected. Some will

do worse. It's still a long regular season ahead of

us. Patience. We're getting there.

We should have drafted Deng over Childress. Childress has the worst mechanics in his jump shot that I have ever seen. His jump shot looks like a shot put and to top it off he misses as at an alarming rate.

Deng is already showing impact on a team better than the Hawks.

How long are people going to give Childress a pass? He has to show something...he hasn't done that at all. Not even a smidget of promise in his game, especially for the 6 pick in the draft.

Childress was a bad bad pick at 6. He would have been a good 17 to 18th pick where he was originally projected anyway!!! We jumped the gun in the week before the draft and he skyrocketed up the draft because of the Hawks interest. Childress was not a top ten prospect two weeks before the draft.

When the choice was between Deng and J-Chillz, we already had a guy who couldn't hit a three in Diaw. We knew that Jackson was not staying and there was probably the deal for Harrington already on the table. Us getting Chillz was us filling the need for a guy who could be our 2.

I think over time, Chillz will step up and step pass Deng. You're comparing a guy who is multitalented to a guy who only does a couple of things.

I distinctly remember nbadraft.net having Childress ranked in between 11th or 15th for weeks. I am not sure about draftcity.com and when he moved up, but he only moved up weeks before the draft on nbadraft.net.

Exactly when I am not sure because he wasn't on my radar for the Hawks to draft him anyway, so I didn't keep up with him. He came into the Hawks drafting him 6 radar screen very late in the game.

I personally didn't keep up with his rise but I DO KNOW at one point he was not a Top Ten Prospect at least by nbadraft.net standards.

Deng was rated higher than him on both boards even up to the draft. We should have drafted Deng at 6!!
