"We have to tighten up,'' said Johnson, who was in foul trouble in the second half. "I think they wanted it more than we did in the second half. They came out in the third, made a run and took the lead and we never recovered from that. We have to learn to go up another level.''

The Nets shot almost 58 percent in the second half in rallying from a 13-point deficit.

Atlanta, which shot 68 percent in the first half in taking a 70-60 lead, was limited to 38 percent shooting in the second half, 15 of 40.

"We came out lackadaisical in the second half and it showed,'' said Mike Bibby, who added 15 points and six assists for Atlanta.

Obviously Woody got to go

You can lead a horse to the water, but you can't make it drink.

The Players have to step it up. Its not playstation, Woody does not have a controller in his hand. Players have to step up to the bat and hit the ball. Have to decide to throw their bodies and play some defense.

The Players!!!

When JJ went out early in the 3rd with foul trouble we started getting spanked

Smith tried to play Jefferson at SF but got torched. Carter was shooting lights out.

We did not have the perimeter defenders to guard Jefferson, Harris, and Carter. WHERE WAS WEST ! Smith, Chills, and Marvin can't guard players that quick on the permeter consistently. Smith can lock them down for the stretch run when he is focused but not throughout the whole game. Smith is best at PF when he can effect shots in the paint....not chasing Jefferson around screens.........lke West should have been doing.

On offense, Marvin, Smith, and Chills cannot space the floor properly for a SF. At least Chills and Smith stand out at the 3 point line but the defense doesn't respects them to hit from there. Marvin stands 3 steps inside the 3 point line making his defender stand very lose to the paint to clog the lane and play help defense.

We need a SF who can guard on the perimeter and hit an out side shot to give more room in the paint for every one else.

Horford playig center vs. the Nets tall front line did not seem to be the problem. He had a great game.

The problem was at the wing positions and Carter & Jefferson getting and keeping JJ in foul trouble. I would have liked to have seen some hard fouls on Carter to try to shake him up. He was only had 4 FTs all night but alot of fouls before he was shooting.

We need a quicker wing guy who can defend the perimeter and shoot. I thought West should have been given chance to slow down Carter and or Jefferson in the 3rd and /or 4th quarters. Oh well too late now. He is the only guy besides JJ who can physically guard those guys.

He didn't lead the horse to the water... he led it to a [censored] hole.

That benching of JJ and Marvin with 3 fouls and 8 minutes to go in the third quarter was atrocious. Name one coach that take out his best players and shooter (who's been shot) with 3 fouls with that much time left in a game of this importance.

What is obvious is Marvin is a dufous and can't play D.

Everytime he drives the lane, he goes spastick losing control. If there is a defender near him the officials call a foul. The guy is an oaf.

I have never seen worse D than last night. How many dunks, holy crap it was unbelievable. Marvin can't guard shinola.

It was ridiculous. Either New Jersey took uncontested wide open 3 pointers or they drove for dunks. Good grief.

If Marv's D was so atrocious, why didn't Smoove or Chillz do anything to stop Carter or Jefferson in the 3rd? NJ scored 34 pts in the 3rd quarter and took control of the game.

Such a lame position. What does Smoove or Chillz defense have to do with the goodness of Marvin's defense?

Are you one of the same people that blast Woody saying JJ needs rest? It seems to me if he leaves him in, he gets blasted, if he rest him in the second half, he gets blasted. Bibby and Josh were in the game and both are better scorers than Marvin. Your assertion is silly.

No one defended well last night, but Chillz was the worst. He was late or lame on I counted 4 possessions where a guy penetrated and got all the way to the basket because he didnt rotate over at all/in time. It can't be that easy to score in an NBA playoff type game. The Hawks don't play defense hard enough to win tough games.

He also kept letting freakin' Nachbar get free for easy dunks in the 1st half. No one played good D, but his was esp. horrible.

Chillz is a quick leaper but his lateral quickness is pretty terrible. His lane agility time at the combine was 28th out of the top 30 players drafted (He might have beat Pavel Podkolzine too but Podkolzine didn't run). The only guys in the top 30 he beat were Okafor and Jefferson.

Chillz gambles too much on D (maybe BECAUSE of his lack of lateral quickness) and ends up out of position on too many occasions. Chillz is a very smart guy. He needs to follow Battier's example and defend with his head rather than relying on his athletic ability.

So we drafted this guy over Iguodala and Deng knowing this??

Awesome.

That, Chillz's shot, Iggy's defense, and Deng's trade value were why drafting Childress over them made absolutely no sense to me. None. I like Chillz alright but he had so many fixed limitations. No sense.

That was a huge reason why he was drafted because we were going to have such a young team for so many years we needed a young veteran to help lead on the floor. There is no telling how much of an impact he has had on the development of Smoove and some of our other young guys. Childress was also supposed to be a pretty good defensive player who could score without having plays run for him and he has been that player for the most part. If Chillz had turned out to be an absolute flop like Shelden instead of a player who is quite comparable to Iggy and Deng I would be pretty upset but that's not the case.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

So true, but to solve this simple problem, add salt to the oats you feed the horse.

Woody certainly can't play for there guys. He can't make that defensive stop, either

inside or from behind the 3 point line. He can't make those shots fall.

However, it's his job to add the salt to the oats. He has to find some way to get that

desire up to a higher level. Some need a pat on the back. Others need a swift kick

in the seat of the pants. Some need to be pulled from the game in a timely manner.

Others, you gotta let them play.

Have these players been properly trained? I don't know. If they are doing exactly as

they have been trained, something is wrong with the training. If they are not doing

what they have been taught, then there is a breakdown in communications.

Sometimes, the offense fails. Shots just refuse to fall. On defense, we have no such

excuse. Defense will break down. We know that. Opponents shots all seem to

fall. Things like that happen. But, a good, solid defense should prevail thru these

things. Hawks defense fails this test.

Wish I knew the answer for the remainder of this season. We're not getting any

more new players. We're not getting any new coaches. What ever the answer

is, time for finding it is short. We need it fixed - - - NOW!!!!
