It sure looked likely that Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo would be suspended for one game following his “bump” of referee Marc Davis in last night’s Game 1 loss to the Atlanta Hawks — and now according to Mike Dowling, sports anchor for WCVB in Boston, it’s official. Rondo is out for Game 2.

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended for Game 2 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the Atlanta Hawks for making contact with a game official, NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson announced Monday.

Rondo chest-bumped referee Marc Davis with 41 seconds remaining in Sunday's 83-74 Game 1 loss at Philips Arena, earning his second technical and automatic ejection. Rondo, who earned both technicals while vehemently protesting a foul call against teammateBrandon Bass, said after the game that the bump was unintentional, but the league apparently viewed it as otherwise.

This is Rondo's second referee-related suspension in three months. He was also suspended for two games in February after zipping a ball at an official.

The NBA rulebook states, "Any player or coach guilty of intentional physical contact with an official shall automatically be suspended without pay for one game. A fine and/or longer period of suspension will result if circumstances so dictate."

Fair. 2 games would be too much IMO.

IMO I feel 2 games would have been fair, considering he already threw a ball at a ref this season and got 2 games. Not he gets only 1 game for actually making contact? At the same time, Im glad it is not 2 games because I do not want to hear all of the so called 'experts' saying we only won the series because Rondo is out.

Hope we don't play like we did against Miami back near the beginning of the season. Lebron and Wade were both out with injuries and the Hawks lost in triple OT. Just because Rondo is out doesn't mean this will be some pushover game. We need another strong start!

This is my fear, that the Hawks will be too relaxed because Rondo is out. I think our approach should be to pressure the ball full court at every opportunity.

Point guard "duties" will likely fall not upon a substitute, but on Paul Pierce. Two of the last three games he played in when Rondo was out:* 14 assists and 3 turnovers to go along with 29 points in a win versus Dwight-less Orlando (4/18/12)* A team-leading 8 assists and 2 turnovers (Ray Allen also had 7 assists) in a loss at Oklahoma City (2/22/12)Pierce has averaged 7 assists per game while appearing in 12 of the 13 games Rondo did not this season, 3.5 assists per game in all the rest.~lw3

If that's the case he still needs to be pressured when bringing the ball up court so that it takes them longer to get into their offense. Hopefully he will be too busy worrying about running the offense to pay attention to Joe consistenly or he will be too tired.

I can't wait to see how many bad officiating we will get from here on out. Ugh...

You can guarantee that tonight, the refs will side with everything Boston does. You can guarantee that Boston will play more physical. You can guarantee that Josh will be slapped every way he can be slapped. It's Boston's unstated mission to work on the frailty of Josh. The question today is.. are you really a leader?I hope that LD prepares them for what is about the happen. Boston will pick up the physicality and the refs will look the other way. If we retaliate, we will be called for it. Josh will be their target. This is a time we need Zaza in there to do some enforcing.
