I agree we need to land a star. I am skeptical we can do it outside the draft.

Just calling someone a star isn't good enough. Simply making the

all star team isn't enough.

Perhaps being elected as a starter on the all star team?

When advertisers come calling, offering those big $$$ to make a commercial

to promote their products might be a good measuring stick.

Could it be that a team might improve one or more of their players chances of

being considered as a star by having them appear in a lot of their team promotions?

Their appearance on billboards, radio and TV advertising makes the public

more aware of them. Doesn't make them a better player, but it does inhance them

in the eyes of the public.

So, yes we need some stars. Hawks front office needs to work on what we have.

Bulls - 1 incarnation (Jordan MVP/Pippen)

Mavs - 1 incarnation (Dirk MVP)

Pistons - 2 incarnations (Thomas/Dumars, Billups/Wallace: no mvps)

Spurs - 2 incarnations (Robinson MVP/Duncan MVP -- Duncan MVP/Parker/Ginobili)

Heat - 2 incarnations (Shaq MVP/Wade; Lebron MVP/Wade)

Celtics - 2 incarnations (Bird MVP/McHale; Garnett MVP/PP/Allen)

Rockets - 1 incarnation (Hakeem MVP)

Billups Pistons: 2 All-NBA players (Billups & Wallace) including 1 player with 5 All-NBA appearances (Wallace)

1978-79 Supersonics: 2 All-NBA players (bizarrely, Jack Sikma never made All-NBA despite finishing top 10 in MVP voting multiple times). This team is the best example of quality depth with the top 7 players in minutes played all making All-Star teams.

It seems like your model should start with the question of how to land that MVP talent if your goal is winning a championship and certainly if you have any pretense of winning multiple championships.

This tired ole topic again? Man, the season can't start soon enough. Yes, we need a guy that the fans can get around and can give us 18 ppg, but don't expect the next Kobe to fall into our laps. I'm feeling we will draft our scoring SG/SF in 2014. Since it's Danny doing the drafting, it'll probably be Dario Saric. I would hope we go American for a scorer because Americans tend to be more physical, but I know a lot would love to see us take a certain Canadian...

Why don't we just make one. (There was a movie where they did that some time ago. Except it wasn't a superstar, it was a beautiful women ... I digress) Build the right system, draft the right guys, turn them into superstars by winning a couple championships. The Ferry way? Hope so

That 2010-2011 Dallas team had some good players, but Dirk is a bit different than a lot of those MVPs. Dirk plus an old Kidd, an aging Marion, an aging Jason Terry, a resurrected Tyson Chandler. I like all those guys and they played well together, but those are some one dimensional (but good) players with some weaknesses.

You don't need an mvp to win it all, but I think you need one "unguardable" player. also, if you have a great record, your best player may be named the mvp or has a leg up, so the mvp correlation is not causation.

And those sonics teams ruled NBA jam.

Dirk was awesome during those playoffs.

27.7 ppg on .609 TS% over 21 games

That is better than any playoff or regular season in his career. In fact, his career his ts% for the regular season was 2010-11 as well. He was still at his peak as a scorer.

If anyone can find the last Hawk to do that, I'll tip my cap but I don't think we've ever had anyone score like that with anything close to that efficiency.

The impossible only takes a little longer. I read that list of stars

who won it all with their team. I agree. They are / were great stars.

We want one or two of our very own. We all agree. Still, no one

seems to be able to give us a satisfactory answer to the question:

"Where do we get one?"

Do they have to be made? Or, are they born that way? Probably

some of both. A player born with the God given ability to do great

things, then an orginization spending the time and money to make

them great. The player must be willing to put in a lot of work and

listen to those in the know for this to happen.

Still, the question remains. Where and how do we get our very own?

We might tank the season and just hope and pray that certain grand

and wonderful player fell to us in the draft. These players, as good / great

as they may be, come with no money back guarantee. They are not

automatically a great NBA star to turn the franchise around. Otherwise,

whoever gets that top every year would be going from mediocre to the

championship level every season.

We all want those great, all star players. So, if the draft is not the answer,

where can we obtain this elusive champion we all want and desire? Anyone

with the answer to this, don't post it here. Go directly to the Hawks front

office and inform them. They need to know. If you post it here, then

everyone will know and we would want to keep it a secret!!!
