benhillboy
Thoughts? A lot of people killing the move on the radio. I'd be much more confident if I knew that these new owner meetings won't abolish kickoffs. Judging by other rule change propositions, these clowns (and Rich McKay, why does he still work for us, ugh!) will do anything. He's better than what we had that's for sure, even at 31. I haven't liked a full-time returner since Rossum. He surely won't still have the speed and best returner cuts I've ever seen, but I think his best asset was vision and anticipation, and that won't leave him. No punt return last year over 25, no kick return over 50. That's pathetic.
GrimeyKidd
We can be creative with him on offense
Admin
If he got anywhere near $4 million per like he was looking for then it's an awful signing as he's not good on offense and the kick return game is being reduced drastically. Holliday got something like $750k and the difference between he and Hester isn't much at this point.
jy23
I know it's not for the 4 mill he was asking for that's why it took so long toget it done. The guy was in town for like 3 days before we signed him, I think he realized he wasn't going to get what he was asking for and just settled on whatever we were offering. He's much better than anything we've had in years so I'm cool with it.

Admin
Wow that's a lot of money for a 32 year old return specialist in this day and age. Maybe y'all will get lucky and he will have learned how to play WR all of a sudden.

Just the threat of Hester back there is significant. He probably won't see the full 3 years. I don't know what the cap hit is this year though. I don't understand the salary vs the cap hit though. Hard to calculate the cap hit but it should be his guaranteed salary for this (probably 1/3 of his total contact amount - his signing bonus if he got one, which they can spread over the whole 3 years) so it's probably 2-5 million this year. And yeah I get wanting Hester, trust me I was wanting him on the Phins, but when you've got a guy who's much younger and close to his equal in Trindon Holliday getting less than $1 or you can get a guy who's better than Hester now if you wanted to pay for him in Jacoby Jones who got 4 yrs / 12 mil. And as has been mentioned a few times the NFL is basically ruling out there kickoff return so then you've got punt returns and that's basically it. Plus with Jacoby you can actually play him at WR and have him be a weapon. You could also go the draft route and get a young guy like that kid Dri Archer who ran in the 4.2's this year if I'm not mistaken.
jy23
Holiday is dangerous but he has fumble problems or fielding problems, whatever you wanna call it. They brought him in for a visit but didn't sign him. I seriously doubt his cap hit will be above 2.5 this year. I'm cool with it either way, the guy is infinitely better than anything we've had in years. The threat of Hester sometimes causes punters to do dumb things, shanking kicks, hanging kicks, etc.....so even if he's not scoring touchdowns he will make a huge impact in my eyes. Ebert
I thought Arenas was signed to be our PR/KR.Too much money but we will be in better field position for sure next year.We still need a pass rusher, a starter free safety, a TE (I would try to sign a veteran, I have confidence in Toilolo, I would prefer to look to other position in the draft), probably a OT or even a C and maybe an ILB for depth if we are changing to 3-4...Damn. Too many holes... But, there is no perfect team in the world and we started the free agency with even more holes so I think we are in the right way.Draft a pass rusher, an OT and a FS and we are almost ready. WraithSentinel
Javier was sign to add depth to the CB position. We only got 3 CBs sign before Javier. Even then he is only making around $750K. Falcons brought back Jerry for $725K. Getting those 2 players and at their price kind of offset what they are paying Hester which isn't much anyways. Gray Mule
Who say's he can't be a fairly decent pass receiver? If he can scare the bejabbers out of the opposition when he's returning a punt, why wouldn't he have much the same effect if he caught a pass? Don't expect great things from a recievers position but, even if he's a decoy, someone had better cover him pretty well. Give him the ball in the open field, however he gets it, and watch out! We proved last season that a team can't have too many good recievers. Just thinking about what might happen and what he is capable of makes a wee glimmer come into our eye! GO ATL !! Ruckus
Only $2.5 mill guaranteed. That's not a lot. He has incentive to earn the rest. I think the Falcons will use him creatively in the offense. We all know he sucks at WR. That's no secret. The goal is to get him in open space however we can. A la Darren Sproles. Because he's a terrible route runner and doesn't get separation. I've been watching Hester for a very long time, back when he was a kid on the Hurricanes and he's always been a poor receiver. He's just not a threat in that part of the game. You can force the ball to him and hope for the best but if you guys are expecting him to be Sproles like in space on offense then you are going to be disappointed. benhillboy
I don't know how much an NFL win is worth, but if he has one vintage monster game (200 yards, 2 TD, clearly won the game for us type sh&t) then his contract is justified to me. I don't see him on offense at all though. I'm like Dol, he embarrassed himself at WR.
WraithSentinel
If Julio,HD and Roddy can stay healthy. Hester will not be seeing the ball unless it is some trick running play you saw the Falcons run with Julio. I think we can all agree Falcons likely BS him by saying they will find a place in the offense for him. They want him more for his return ability. Ruckus
I don't think they only got him for returns but we shall see. I mean hasn't he only had like 1 return for a TD in the last 2 seasons? I'm not expecting him to be Sproles by any means. But he will make it in the game for creative plays. Otherwise we wouldn't have signed him IMO. Edited March 22, 2014 by Ruckus
Moderators PSSSHHHRRR87 Posted March 22, 2014 Moderators Report Share Posted March 22, 2014 Hester could also be used in the screen, much like the 'Aints have with Sproiles. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
