Diesel's Viewpoint: Shelvin Mack.

Time to put Mack under the lens.

It seems to me that while we were giving Mike Scott much of the credit for game 5, a bigger part of the credit should have gone to Shelvin Mack. I know that we're not supposed to reward guys for 1 game of 1 series (hello Chris Crawford). However, Mack is a guy who was talented in college and has played his way to the #2 PG in Atlanta spot. I know that there are several squawkers who would like to move him to make room for Dennis but wait.... Just look over some of this:

Mack was our 3rd best 3pt shooter in the Indy Series.

Mack had a huge 4.2 to 1 A/TO ration in the Indy series.

Mack was not totally abused in the Indy series.

Mack is shooting 44 percent from the right corner 3 spot this season.

Mack is 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, but he's tough and constantly battles on the defensive end of the floor while helping the spacing on the offensive end.

Mack started off as a 10 day guy. I think he's good for 1 or 2 more years.

If we release Mack, he will probably go to Boston and end up scorching us everytime we play them.

I agree. Mack is really good. By far the best backup PG we've had. The guy can shoot, drive, handle the ball and plays decent defense. He's not flashy but i like having him around.

Everyone has high hope for Dennis but you can't give him even the backup job next year until he proves he can do it. If we end up with 3 good PGs then so be it. We can always trade.

Isn't that how the Spurs developed George Hill and then traded him for the draft pick to get Kawhi? I'd love to develop Shelvin and hopefully get something good for him or Schröder in trade.

The Spurs are too cap conscious. I don't think they will pay for a second contract for many of their guys. They view them all (except the big 4) as expendable.

Unless Mack gets some crazy offer; we have to keep him. He is to great role player; and it will not be easy filling his shoes with someone as competent or as young.

My feeling too. He was competing with Royal Ivey for a spot and no knock on Royal but the difference in abilities seems pretty big now.

At the same time it only works because of Duncan.

...And Pop and RC and Tony and Bud about 10 more people we don't know behind the scenes. I love Timmy, but we've been through this. It's a slap in the face to the rest of their organization to give him all the credit. He'd even laugh at that notion. They're probably the best example of the team concept in Modern Basketball History. Aaron Baynes was killing Portland last night. I'm a Spurs fan and I don't even know who he is.

As far as Mack, I love the guy. He isn't even conscious of his outstanding assist to turnover ratio like a Calderon: he's usually aggressive. Like you said, he always gives forth effort on D, has a reliable mid range jumper with soft misses, has great size, and is poised with how he handles and sets up the floor. I like how he squares up his man off the dribble and can go either way. Dennis might never reach his level of professional readiness.

A PG depth chart of Teague, Mills, and Mack would suit me just fine. Lance could take over if by some disaster all three went down. I hate to give up on Dennis so early, but I just knew he would have a Darren Collison-like rookie season. Instead, he had a Dennis Schröder type rookie season. Starting off on the good foot he has not.

The reason Duncan would laugh is because he's Humble. However, all the boys would tell you that with Timmy D, it's easy to do whatever the hell you want to do and it will be successful. Timmy D will go down as the best PF to ever play this game. Not because of his ring count, but because of his consistency and excellence. If they wanted Timmy to be a down low presence, he could have been that. IF they wanted him to be a pick and roll specialist.. he could have been that. He probably could have even flourished in a Paul Westhead offense. This is no disrespect to "the boys in the back" but if you replace Timmy D with Antoine Jamison or Elton Brand and the Spurs may get only 1 championship. It's about what he brings to the table and what he allows you to do.

KG, Malone, Dirk, Ewing is all we need to know in order to prove out that it takes a team to win a championship. Its not just Duncan's play; it is also his selflessness. Guy is only making about ten million a year so this Spurs Team can keep on keeping on...

Will Hawks keep Mack long enough for Rathbun to figure out his first name isn't Sheldon?
