Dominique Wilkins :: Walter Iooss Jr./SI

The Atlanta Hawks announced yesterday their plan to unveil a Dominique Wilkinsstatue in March. Wilkins has always been one of my favorite players. I even named my old parakeet after him (R.I.P. Dominique the Parakeet). So congrats to Wilkins, congrats to the Hawks for this positive news story after a disastrous week and congrats to Atlanta for getting a statue of your biggest basketball star. Good for Nique. At this point I'll take any little bit of positive news we can get, even though i bet this was pushed through recently for a little bit of good PR to counteract all the negative. I'm sure Nique is happy regardless.

Not a fan of statue-ing people who are still alive, especially if they aren't transcendent icons, but good for Nique. At least it's 100 times more deserving than Bob Griffith III. Relatively, the Spurs would have to erect about 4 or 5 if they weren't classy.

I think its a step in the right direction to have an icon for the community to see.  Makes me think of other teams that have a strong history of heroes.
