I was nerding out with spotrac.com and took a look at our 2017 cap situation. Here is how it looks

Dwight Howard - $23,500,000

Paul Millsap - $21,472,408 (early opt out).

Kent Bazemore - 16,910,112

Walter Tavares - 1,014,146

Malcom Delaney - $905,249

Bembrey, Prince and 2017 1st round draft pick (aproximately $4.5 million).

Schröder - $3,824,518 (Qualifying Offer)

THj - 3,335,707 (Qualifying Offer)

Total - 10 players - 75,462,140

Projected Cap - $108,000,000

Available space - $32,537,860

Okay so things to remember....Dennis will get offers from other teams, so that number is going up. THj will be gone unless he takes a big step forward. Assuming Dennis got a huge $20m next year and THj signs elsewhere, we'd have approximately $19 million to sign players with. If Paul opted out and got the max, that number goes down to $10 million. Either way, at least it looks like we won't suck for some time.

If Milsap opts out you don't resign him.  I love Millsap, but he ain't worth 30+ million a year.  Anywho I made a post about this the other day. The hawks are in GREAT shape for 2017 see below.

Player Position               Salary
Blake Griffin PF               $31,321,650 24%
Dwight Howard C               $23,500,000 18%

PLAYER (8) POS.         QUALIFYING OFFER CAP FIGURE

Mike Muscala PF         $1,014,746 $1,014,746

Could it go head to head with any team in the NBA? I believe it can.  Only problem is our Bench isn't the strongest at the PF and Center position unless Moose and Eddy show stark improvement.  However, I see Eddy as being pretty good defensively then and that's all we need from him.  We can find a veteran back up point guard for Dennis either this year or next.

We can afford ANY max player next year ( Iknow they may not choose the Hawks) and dish out for a great number two.  I just choose Griffin and Heyword because they'd be my choice.

So do you think this team can rule the East and do the unthinkable and win it all?  Also, what would your 2017-2018 potential Atlanta Hawks Championship Roster look like.

You have 1 to many draft picks in there. They aren't going to go over the cap by $19...but given you dropped 22 million on Haywood, its safe to say that Prince is the starting SF next year (assuming he can).

and the estimated salary cap for 2017 is 108 million so you're estimating another $5m to high.

The estimated salary for this year was $90.  If you look the trend has been $3 over the estimate for 2015 -2016, $4 over the esimtate for 2016- 2017. So I'm assuming the actual salary will be $113 million.  Also, the owners said he would spend  up to the Luxury tax.  This wasn't supposed to be a real roster, it's just to show the Hawks have options.

I just choose Griffin and Heyword because they'd be my choice.

Hayward wont be available for that price. He's going to cost a lot more than that.

And if it's a choice between Griffin and Millsap, it's Millsap all day long. I don't care that he's older, he's a better player, fits our system, knows our system, and isn't as injury prone - plus Millsap will probably be our team leader this year, along with Korver. I want no part of losing Whorefart and Millsap in consecutive years. Bring him back on a 3 year contract, and can probably do it under his max. But max him if you have to, I don't care. Do Not Lose Millsap!

You're also probably not going to get Schröder back for that low of an amount either. Schro is going to play well this year, and as a restricted free agent some team is likely to offer him his max, which will obviously be more than the $23.5m per year from this season.

Our 3 big money guys are going to be Schröder, Dwight, and Millsap with Bazemore being the one medium money guy. After filling out the roster with players like you have listed in Korver and Hardaway, we probably wont be able to afford another big free agent. It is what it is.

He's definitely opting out. Sadly the FA PF market next year isn't good. It's pretty much Blake, Ibaka and Millsap. Then you got role players like Taj Gibson.

To get Blake, Dwight better start some recruiting at the All Star game next year.

Schröder is less than 7 years experience...his max is currently about $21 million....that $25+ million number you are looking at is for players 7-10 years in the league.

I never actually threw out a number, just said it would be higher than what is listed. And no, the first  year max salary for players in years 0-6 is currently $22.117M, with up to 7.5% raiser per year for up to 5 years if he resigns with us. The $22.117M  figure isn't the yearly average, it's the starting first year amount. The average is obviously higher. That's how Whorefart just agreed to a contract with a yearly average of $28.25M when his first year salary is only $26.540M (7-9).

And that is under THIS year's salary cap, which is significantly smaller than what next year's salary cap will be, and therefore max amounts will be larger next year. The $22.117M first year starting salary this year will be more like $24-25M next year.

Also, there is no way in hell that Hardaway is "gone" next year. Not unless he just totally flops. No way is Bud going to trade a 1st for him, spend 2 years developing him, and then let him go at 25 years old when he'll be hitting his prime. Especially not when we have his full Bird rights and can pay him whatever we want, even going over the cap if we have to. If we have to pay him a lot of money, that's a good problem to have because it means he balled out for us this year. And if he still needs a little seasoning, we can bring him back on a much cheaper deal. Korver and Thabo are old and likely one or both of them are gone, not Hardaway.

Whatever salary cap figure you are using you need to adjust your figures to account for these facts:

1. If Dennis' play improves - if the Hawks don't max him, some team will offer him a max contract (as an RFA) at 25% of the cap and the Hawks will either match or let him leave.

2. Blake Griffin will get a max at 30% of the cap

3. Gordon Haywood will get a max at 30% of the cap.

Even at Paul's age, I'm taking him over Blake who just cannot stay healthy.  Millsap offers more balance next to Dwight.

Somehow I missed this.  Someone else mentioned it in another post. The projected cap for next year is rising by $8 million, not $13 million.  For the Hawks who will still be in prime position, it only revises down the amount of salary they can take in next year.

But for teams that overspent in free agency this year....Boston, GS, San Antonio, Chicago, NY, Cleveland....it really hamstrings their flexibility going forward.  I'm really liking the Hawks in 2017-2018.  I'm thinking you are going to see a number of trades involving teams trying to acquire 1st round draft picks. Those low starting salaries are going to be gold when trying to acquire big name free agents. Having 2 picks this year and 1 next year really helps the Hawks by tying up 3 roster slots with only about $4.5 million in total salary.
