The idea is that if you sign a guy straight-up, you're limited to whatever cap room you have left--unless you can, instead of signing him under cap room, trade for him under the trade exception rule. If yours is a non-taxpaying team, that means you get some wiggle room based on how much in player salary you send out versus how much you take back.

Hard to see how the SnT route helps us in Dwight's specific case, actually. But there could be another SnT for a RFA, and they just want to retain some latitude to adjust Dwight's salary somewhat, ostensibly so that the trade would put us over the cap and allow us the MLE.
