So, this is pretty much par for the course, if I recall correctly.

That is, there comes a point in a discussion when RE figures he has three options... concede the point, figure out some way to not concede the point, or abandon the conversation... and given that the first is evidently unacceptable... the second is evidently unattainable... then he's left with the default.

Yes. I'm still the villain in these stories. The disingenuous villain. Of course.

Oh the irony? Yes. Oh, the irony.
