I've been watching the 2024 NBA Draft class and it's been... weaker than usual

A lot of this is defensive feel and his defensive awareness where he's world class where he can play faster than he actually is like Draymond. This is what makes Gobert one of the all time great defenders as I've explain in Gobert related threads on this specific site before.

I am talking moreso sprints and half court offensive speed

This took Gobert 5 seconds

This took Edey 5 seconds and he didn't start to sprint till he passed half court.

Gobert looks like he's moving faster but when you time it, it's clear Edey is faster. Edey just covers more stride length. He also isn't fighting gravity when he runs like Gobert is. It look like gravity was slowing him down while Edey was just moving effortlessly in a straight line. In the half court offensively. It's the same. Edey times are all better.

One was explosive in his finish and one wasn't.  I'll let you determine who finished the plays explosively and who didn't.  The fact is, Gobert is a more explosive leaper.  He has better second leap athleticism.  He has better lateral movement athleticism.  His ability to start and stop is better.  His ability to run and redirect is better.

Can Zach Edey do this?

No, no one is expecting him to have self creation skills. He's a movement player. He's like an inverse Klay Thompson

Okay, he is a more explosive leaper as he's more fluid. This is already noted KB. I am not you, I don't have to lie to kick it.

I disagree on the lateral movement. Edey can move his feet when he's set and better than Rudy. It's the fluidity that's clearly different. Edey has better body control, you see it on screens and in the paint finishing around traffic than Rudy.

Rudy obviously has the fluidity edge but Edey moves his feet straight line better and lateral better. His issue is fluidity, Rudy doesn't have an issue in any athletic area. He just isn't as athletic as Edey.

If Edey was 25% as good as folks itt are saying he is, he wouldn't be a Boilermaker rn.

But the real question is wtf is a boilermaker?

A boilermaker is when you drop a shot glass full of whisky into a full glass of beer. Chug and enjoy.

@NBASupes can you explain what you mean by fluidity? It’s such a big part of your argument and I’m not certain I understand what you’re trying to express.

What fluidity means is ease of movement.  The opposite of which is mechanical movement.  Zach Edey is very mechanical with his movement.

I mean I guess that’s what I was thinking, but that doesn’t seem to coincide with Supes answers to the issues raised with Edey.

I will say that Edey, like all draft prospects, isn’t a finished product so it isn’t fair to compare his clips from college to Gobert after he’s been in the league for years.

I don’t think he’s MVP caliber like Supes, but I do think he’ll be a positive contributor. Floor of 15 min/game player by year two, ceiling of a contributing starter.

I won’t be mad if the Hawks draft him, but I will be mad if they don’t draft any big (Missi, Clingan, Ware, Filip…).

It's reaction time physically. Look at LSU, this is elite fluidity for Edey size

Everything is explosive.

Once he gets the ball, you are in trouble.

With Edey, it's takes time. More time than we are accustomed too. Some guys get help side steals off of him that would be easy posters for Orlando Shaq.

You also see it for steals.

Even his movement while fast for his size when timed looks clunky.

Gobert has good fluidity. He just lacks a lot of the physical and athletic strength Edey has but since his fluidity is good, he looks natural.

While LeBron has good fluidity for his body type, he looks clunky compared to some of the top players like PG13 and he looks really clunky compared to Michael Jordan who is the fluidity 🐐

Some people will never see LeBron as a equal or better because they just hate they way he looks playing the game and MJ who they loved looked so smooth and like a swan.

Fluidity really matters. Poor fluidity negative impacts self creation skills. If your dribble is taking longer than the physical reaction of others, they will have time to react to what you are doing. Whereas if you have elite fluidity, you can be too quick.

So that's what it means. This is KB favorite poor fluidity moment from Edey

It's more detailed than this. That's why you are keep getting movement confused with fluidity. You can have terrific movement for your size like Edey and still have poor fluidity.

There are tons of guys in the NBA with good fluidity and poor movement for their size at the 5. The king of nice fluidity and terrible movement is Boban.

The issue you get is guys who can't differentiate the two and that's where they get in trouble. There is really no one with poor fluidity in the NBA outside of Edy and he's now in Madrid

Don't ask me a question, get a wrong answer from KB and think that's my take when it's KB take.

He's a movement specialist. He specializes in two movements. Big man movement which is common for bigs in today's NBA. And low post movement which hasn't been seen since Shaq.

This is why he's so productive. He does 90% of his damage before he touches the ball. It's hard to understand for most fans but what he is, is a gamecharger if you have the right HC, personnel, heliocentric ball handler, and scheme which we all 4.
