SG anyone?

One 0ther thing that I was looking at was our need for a SG. I know in times past, we have mentioned the name Eddie Jones. Well, right now he is exactly what we need. A defensive specialist who can score when we need him too.

The thing that makes Jones available is that he has that mammoth contract that Miami has to get out of soon. IN fact, I think that they would rather lose him and Grant than Zo. However, it's likely that ZO must go.. (Dallas for NVE, Lafrentz?)

Anyway... Playing around with some thoughts leds me to this rough but thought out plan.

DJ/Hendu/1st to Miami for Jones.

If we consider Miami to be rebuilding.... Then what better way to rebuild than to get DJ and a first.

In their transition, they can have:

Zo/Grant/Butler/DJ/PG.

If they were to pull the Dallas trade they would have:

Lafrentz/Grant/Butler/DJ/NVE...

I'm not proclaiming that DJ is already there.... However, DJ makes less than EJ and he has great potential especially defensive.

As much as I love Eddie Jones game, Diesel, he definitely is not what we would need now, not because of his defense but his offense. He will demand the ball also and it may cause distraction now, we would need too many balls to go around. But tell you this, I think someone will come to us for cheaper and might even be more available these days. Doug Christie, can shoot the 3, and defend......great size and knows how to play Kobe. A 1 for 1 swap.....Dion For Doug.

I would love that trade, wouldn't you. Christie would be a great addition and he wouldnt demand the ball, he can concentrate all on D and he can just do the same things he is doing now is Sac Town.

Eddie JOnes is not what we need at this point, at all. He would be nice on paper but at some point you are going to have too many people wanting the ball. It's going to be tight enough as it is. It's not worth dumping DJ and filler for someone who could/would really tilt the scales of chemistry. If you have JT, EJ, Reef and Robinson, someone is going to get the VERY short end of the stick when it comes to shots.

We need good role players who can contribute immediately, not another star level player. DJ is improving just fine and provided he plays defense, is more than enough for us at SG. I've said it before and i'll say it again, you can't have a 20ppg player at every position.

My sentiments exactly - this team is really complete. With DJ standing in as a somewhat reliable three-point threat, a defensive stop-gap, and a general mismatch who will not require many shots, we have the team. Theo won't require that many post passes and general touches, instead relying on put backs and tip ins for the majority of his points. That leaves most of the shots to the "Big Three" - which is exactly how we should have it.

We need a sg that can provide size, defense and ballhandling. I think DJ can provide 2 of the 3 , but he has no handle. JT is not a great ballhandling point guard. I think the loss of Toni is gonna be felt in this area. With a lineup of JT, DJ, Big Dog, SAR, and Theo...JT has absolutely no help handling or distributing the ball. I think you are gonna see teams put alot of pressure on JT early and make him give up the ball. We will be put into position to have to bring in either DD or E Mail for DJ. As a matter of fact, E Mail might be a very good fit for this lineup. Good defense, decent handle, no shots required.

Thats exactly why I would like a player like Doug Christie on our team. Dion for Christie. Christie is 6-7, plays great defense, doesnt need shots and can handle the rock. Christie is exactly what we need, but on the other hand I think DJ can handle the starting 2 well, he can shoot the 3 ball, does not demand the ball and plays great defense.

I agree, Christie would be the perfect fit. However, I don't think we can get him for Dion..I also agree that DJ will probably be ok, but I worry that teams will attempt to trap JT in the backcourt and force DJ or Big Dog to bring the ball up causing many turnovers.. Personally, I don't care if DJ puts up 10 points a game, he needs to play good D and help with the ball..He needs to work harder on his ballhandling than anything else, cause that is a huge weakness in his game..He can hardly dribble at all without putting the ball off his foot..

most of his turnovers come from trying to make a move to the basket and not from trying to bring the ball up. A lot of that has to do with indecision as well as a lack of strength. He is getting more confident and he's getting stronger so hopefully he will show a lot of improvement in that aspect of his game.

He actually does a decent job of handling the ball in the backcourt. He looks awkward at times handling the ball because he's damn near 6'10" but he's not nearly as poor of a ballhandler or passer as people make him out to be. He actually feeds the post better than JT does in my opinion. He will never be Magic Johnson but he can help JT with bringing the ball up when JT gets doubled in the backcourt.

The bottom line is that I think DJ is going to be fine at SG. I'm actually more concerned with how he will defend the T Macs and Paul Pierce's of the world than with how he will handle the ball in the backcourt.

I will feel a lot better about the team if we can get Ira resigned because I think his great D rubs off on everyone else. I also think that resigning Ira is important to the team from a psychological standpoint. Ira was a significant part of our success in the 2nd half of the season last year and I think the players identify his addtion to the roster as the one tangible thing they can point to that led to the turnaround. Every player to a man said last year that resigning Ira was critical to the team's success. If the Hawks get Ira back in addition to going out and getting the Big Dog, I think that the players really believe they can go out and win the EC Title. All that being said, we can't break the bank to resign Ira. He's great for team chemistry and he fits this team's needs like a glove but he's still a role player and needs to be compensated as such. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a 3 year deal at about $1-1.5 million/season but I wouldn't give him much more than that. Hopefully, we'll get something done with him in the next week or so.

Hopefully Newble realizes he isn't going to get much

better anyway else.Hell Rodney Rogers is one of the

best 6th man in the league and he is still waiting on

a place to play.

Dj's ball handling is down right POOR.And he looks even

worse bringing it up because he doesn't control his lower

body well enough and he looks like a piece of cardboard.

Newbie is VERY important to the Hawks. As J.T. is said

to be the heart and soul of this team, Newbie is to the

defense. He is their heart and soul.

He is a hard worker, unselfish but improving on offense,

strong enough to bang around inside, if necessary and

one of the best free throw shooters on the squad.

Cloose ball games are won or lost at the charity stripe.

Getting the call is important, then hitting the shot is

just as important. Veteran players learn how to play

N.B.A. ball without commiting many fouls. Newbie is

very good at this. This is one of the greatest improvements

in the game of DerMarr. About the first game he played,

he had two or three fouls within the first minute he was

on the floor.

We don't need to "Break the bank" but we really need

Newbie. Hope he signs soon.

I dont really want Christie or Newbie. Newbie is a dime a dozen player. We need to give DJ the reins. I know he looked like S!!t at the Shaw camp but he didn't exactly look like he was trying his hardest, and now knowing that we were in the process of getting Dig Dog it seems to me that the Hawks wanted to see how he performed as a 3rd or 4th option. Theo isn't that great on offense and we need him to concentrate on D so don't expect much offense. DJ has the body and potential to be dominant, remember it to KG, Kemp and Tmac till their 3rd season to start to blossum. DJ is a #6 pick we need to go out of our way to make him a star, if nothing else he can help us drop Hendu and bring in more talent if he becomes a star on the rise. So what if we4 lose 5 or 6 more games with than without, by playoff time he will be a bonafide shooting Gaurd.

i want him too... but Dion for Doug, and SACTOWN would flat out LAUGH at us.

DION + 1st and they prob start talking.

Hawks need Doug Christie, and im a big fan of his... in fact i think hes one of the most underrated players in this game. He does things on the court thats not recorded in his stats., but as much as we love DOUG... so does SACTOWN.

No body has mentioned Dion GLover. Dion GLover can handle the ball and has played sparing minutes at the point. Someone mention that if JT got trapped at midcourt he wouldn't have anybody in the starting linup that could handle the ball, well Dion might be the answer. By all means I would like for DJ to be the starter but if not then Dion gets the call. Dion's defense isn't as bad as some make him out to be. Remember he was playing good Defense at the beginning of the season but seemed to loose his concentration or was hampered by injuries later in the season which might have ben the cause for his weak display of Defense. I also hope Dion can continue his great shooting he displayed last year, especially at the beginning of the season where he at one time was over 40% from behind the arc.

times do you remember him getting the ball poked away or stolen in the backcourt? I remember him dribbling the ball off his foot going to the hoop or getting stripped or blocked going to the hoop but I don't remember him turning the ball over in the backcourt very much at all. He looks stiff when he handles the ball in the backcourt (he runs stiff too) but that doesn't mean he turns the ball over. DJ's movements don't look all that fluid but he is much quicker than he looks. He gets up and down the floor very well for a guy his size. He doesn't look like he would be able to jump as high as he does or stay with smaller SGs but he is a great athlete. I guess what I'm saying is that while DJ may appear to be awkward at times, he can still be effective as a ballhandler and passer.

i think when we play teams like the HORNETS where they have both Davis and Wesley that can steal the ball and press like crazy we should either have TERRY/DICKAU or TERRY/EMAIL playing big minutes...

but when its NY and Houston and PG (whoever it may be) are pressing, i think Terry and Johnson/Glover wouldnt too hard of a time...

a game of MATCHUPS... try to matchup best against the other team TOWARDS UR ADVANTAGE

The guy flat out, without a doubt, cannot shoot the ball. Hell, he can't even hit a damn layup. That guy was an albatross on the court for the Kings in the last two games against the Lakers. No.

If you want someone that can be a good role player for the way this team is built now, then you need to look for a Mario Elie type of player.....a player that will give you defense and can hit an open jumper when teams give it to him but isn't going to demand the ball.

Guest Walter

DJ shot more 3pters per FGA than Hubert Davis. Hubert Davis!!! How many times did he TRY to dribble the ball, much less where it could be "poked away or stolen"? Not many. If the few times he did try, he dribbled them off his foot...well, now I feel better.

I do agree that we really need to sign Newbie but not only for his individual and team igniting defense but because he was so offensively efficient from the perimeter. His 50+% shooting slash and put back game compliments Big Dawgs J and occasional post up better than does DJ's average 3pt game.
