Steve Smith to retire from NBA September 30, 2005 EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Steve Smith is retiring after a 14-year NBA career that included a title with San Antonio, with Friday's announcement to come on the campus where he starred for Michigan State. The 36-year-old Smith was the fifth pick in the 1991 draft and averaged 14.3 points in the NBA. Besides the Spurs, Smith played for Miami, Atlanta Hawks, Portland , New Orleans and Charlotte. He won an Olympic gold medal in 2000 and an NBA ring in 2003 with the Spurs. Smith, born in Detroit, is second on Michigan State's career scoring list. He was to announce his retirement at the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center, named for his mother. He donated $2.5 million for the $7.5 million building, which opened in 1998. He would be a great guy to have involved in the organization somehow though.
